Bongo Fury

Hi all,

the charging and sediment lights have just made an appearance on our Bongo, and from reading the posts here I have assumed its the alternator that is on its last legs.
Money is tight (as always at the moment) and I'd like to replace the alternator myself if possible. Is this something a novice can attempt or am I asking for trouble?
Are any specialist tools required?
Can anyone direct me to a (hopefully pictorial) guide of how to approach this?

Charging & sediment lights do indicate Alternator,i did mine some weeks ago.

Yes do it yourself it's probably one of the easiest jobs to do.

have you tested it first to make sure its the alternator? and location in your profile can get you some local advice.

Don't drive it, or if you do make sure you leave the engine running 'till you get home.

Replacing the alternator is a really easy job on a Bongo, even I managed it with my small furry hands. Its straightforward once you look at how it sits in situ, only two or three nuts to loosen, drop the belt then yank out the buggered one.

Reverse above procedure, making sure that the new one goes in (Not as I did & put the same one in again. ).

The hardest bit is tensioning the pulleys when it goes back together. Trick is to get them tight enough so that you can twist 90 degrees with no more than about a quarter inch play when you flex it.

Half hour tops from start to finish - 15 minutes for an expert.

Don't forget to disconnect the battery before doing any of that, or chances are you'll get big bang & have to go hunting for the fuse you've blown
