Whineing when coming off acceleration

Hi All,

Just come back from the Lakes and on the motorway when going over 65mph when I took my foot off the accelerator pedal there is a loud whineing noise and smallish vibration from under the van, I would say it's slightly from the left hand side. The van is a 4WD 2.5turbo diesel.

Any ideas, it is still under warranty from Ian Taylors but don't want to go to him with no ideas of the issue.

Cheers,
Mike.

Can I check this easily? Getting good with the pimps but the mechanics are still not my forte

It shouldn't be THAT difficult really Mike and Katie... but isn't your bongo lowered as much as mine? It could be a ramp job! In fact, i can guarantee it!

Here's when i had mine checked for fluid level/condition at Wheelquick...

Basically the diff case plugs are removed, if oil seeps from the casing the level is fine. If not, stick a clean finger in and down to see if you can find a level... If you have to stick a finger in the diff needs a top up (at best). You may as well change the oil in both diffs if you've gotten this far... DIff oil differs (pun not intended) depending on whether you have a limited slip diff fitted. Best of luck Mike and Katie, i hope it's just a case of a quick top up!

I'm getting a bit ahead of myself there aren't i? #-o Have you checked the usual suspects first? Wheelstuds, wheel bearings etc?

Hi,

Thanks for the post, not checked anything yet. how would i check the studs and bearings? yes the van is decked so it will have to be on the ramp :(

Mike.

The wheelstud torques can be chcked on the floor Mike... You'll need to jack the bongo up to test for any sideways play in the whole wheel(s) for any telltale sign of excessive wheel bearing wear though... Be brutal with the wheel grabbing Mike, there should be no sideways play in any wheel. Have you had any work carried out on the bongo lately?

whilst the wheels are elevated, check the tyres for any egging or odd shapes or signs of castling... Often telltale marks on the tread may reveal the culprit. If you've hit a speedbump a bit too hard with the stiff lowered suspension, you could well have damaged a tyre... though that's more of a rumbling sound than a whining.

Great i'll give those both a go, but not had any work done at all so doubt its the wheelstuds?

I'll keep you posted

Waxoyled recently? Some are of the opinion NOT to touch the rear axle (especially the diff casing) with waxoyl as it may cause overheating of the internals. In real world terms though the breather on top of the diff casing would be pretty hard to block even if you tried to whilst applying the gloopy stuff.

as your a 4wd its very important your tyres are of the correct size, possibly all the same size, but not esential, and with equall tread depth. also is there any diff oil anywhere sprayed around underneath, and can you smell it as it has a very strong strange smell. check the transfer case oil level too, (4wdrive bit)

do a search (top right) for the key words, tyres, rolling radius, 4wd, lots of good suff should pop up.

i would advice you to get it checked as soon as poss.

Hi Guys,

OK will check the tyres, they were brand new when i bought the van about 5 months ago, but they could have been damaged as the roads around my house are pot hole central!

Not noticed a weird smell but will check.

Thanks,
Mike.
