If you are going further afield out of the EU then you may need an IDP.

Also just noticed my licence plastic card is out of date. Seems they have to be renewed every 10 years.

It's also a good idea to get an IDP if you are travelling through Italy or Spain and have one of the older UK driving licenses (the green ones). The old ones aren't always accepted apparently (although they should be).

This was widely publicised in the press when the first photocards were due to expire a couple of years ago and you will also have had a reminder in the post.

Do I get a reminder?

DVLA will send a reminder to drivers whose photocard licences are about to need updating.

But if you've changed address and not told DVLA then you won't get the letter.

Apparently DVLA reports that as of July 2011, 1 in 3 of us has an invalid driving licence due to it being out of date! :o
