voltmeter wiring

i want to fit a voltmeter [digital ] whilst fitting a temperature gauge as in jaylee's thread.
i would like it to switch between LB and SB so i can gauge status of both.
i was thinking of a unit that already has a switch to turn backlight on/off thereby saving power. can it be done and if so what sort of switch do i need to add to switch between batteries?
the backlight switched version has 4 wires but the version with no backlight switch has only 2. which is favourite ?

to get link off ebay~~go to top of ebay page~left click on link,it will be all blue writing~right click & click on copy~~go back on forum (to topic) write whatever your writing about~~drop cursor down a couple of spaces~right click,then left click on paste~~before pressing submit you can press preview to see if everything is ok,if it is press submit.

Hi,I used an ON/OFF/ON 3 pin rocker switch.

does the 3 pin on/off/on switch between lb and sb and will it matter if gauge has backlight on/off switch ?

Hi,the centre pin will be the feed to the gauge,the left or right pins will be the feed to the switch from the sb and the lb.

Looks like the gauge you've linked to can be supplied from the same source as it's measuring as wel as using a seperate source, so as it has 4 leads, that should be 2 leads for measured & 2 for supply, you should be able to put those together to make 2 input leads which will be a positive from the separate on off on switch & an earth, then you just need a fused supply from the LB & a fused supply from the SB to the on off on switch. I used a small toggle switch.

Just a thought, if you're fitting an on off on switch, is there any need to have a unit with an illumination switch built in to save power? You can just switch it off

mmmm.... yup. you're right , i'll get one without backlight switch and put on/off/on switch in there. wiring sounds relatively simple [ it needs to be ! ]
