Alternator service/recon pack?

Looking on lushprojects, it looks to me like you can get the bits to recon an alternator, ie diode pack, voltage regulator & brushes, as well as bearings if they're gone -

Has anyone done this? Any idea of prices? if not - why not?

Nice one Kirsty~i replaced mine a few months ago~~when clearing garage out last weekend & picked it up, i was wondering if they could be reconditioned (like starter motors) as it looks in good nick.

Good shout Teenmal.
The plate on my spare alternator has
Hitachi WL01 18300
LR190-731
12v 90A
& there's also 5ZF if that means anything.
I have emailed the above company with these details.
Any idea what is the usual electrical failing point?

That was a quick reply from them - not good news though
"Hi thanks for email the number LR190-731 is the correct number but this alternator breakdown does not show any repair parts availble from our suppliers they only show rotor stator and unit,
thanks
PAUL"
Where did you get the info on it being a Lucas A1633 Teenmal?

Apparantly Vospers were quoting £300 + for the diode pack & rectifier respectively for "Mazda" parts, making it more expensive for those two parts than a brand new alternator from them (£500+)
These parts must be available as the alternator refurb guys are obviously making a living selling recon alternators for £100+. Apparantly one of the refurb guys in Plymouth seemed very reluctant to offer these parts for sale & just said to bring in the alternator for exchange. Come on peeps lets get these parts tracked down

There is a large auto elecricians just round the corner from me Jeff's Auto Electrics that does alternator repairs, I will pop round this week and ask there as well.

Kirsty as far as I know the Diodes are the most common failure point.

Anyone checking out if repair kits are available, it would be good to know what they consist of, eg, bearings, diode pack, rectifier, voltage regulator, slip rings, Brushholder/brushes, or if parts are available seperately? Especially if it is just the Diode pack that goes.
Haven't taken one apart yet (my spare has just departed for a weeks holiday abroad

) but would it be possible to identify & replace diodes (or other components) in the diode pack or is it (as I suspect?) not going to be that simple?

Auto electricians do a very good deal usually on rebuilding alternators and starters usually for a lot less than recon ones, though I suspect they ofetn used generic rather than specific parts. There are even some around if you look who can up the output if you need it, I was offered a replacement for the 35 A alternator on my boat in the same frame but a 70A output.

Yup, but if they're refurbing them & making a profit, the parts must be available cheaper for those of us capable of doing the work ourselves. It also means you could carry the spares rather than have to think about carrying a spare alternator on a long trip.
