First Gear question!

Hey, ... this may seem like a stupid question but, is it normal that i cant get into first gear untill iv pretty much came to a compleat stand still, i was just wondering because if i try to take off in 2nd on a little roll, it shows tendanceys of stalling.. what is irritating me,... is it just me or is it Ali (yes i have names him) haha

Try lifting the clutch just before you put it into first, rolling slowly.

If you want to avoid damaging/excessively wearing the synchromesh then yes....................

It sounds like it could be a faulty Synchro Hub or Baulk Ring,or the Clutch might need attention,also check the gear box oil level and condition of the oil,a test drive would be needed to make sure..

does it get better/easier to put into 1st if you have two pumps of the pedal instead of just one.if yes then its the fluid side of things,master, slave cylinder or fluid quality. if its the same with two pedal attempts then its the box itself,oil,or more than likely the pressure plate springs, or clutch plate worn.
my manual box was rubbish when i got it off the clutch riding previous owner, the clutch plate was very good but the pressure plate springs were non existant, new 3 piece fitted, then the slave cylinder replaced, then the master cylinder seals replaced then the fluid,and the internal oil with syntran 11. its just about ok now.
i dont think its the best manual gearbox ive ever driven, but for a 15 year old box, shoving a 4 wheeldrive 1.5 ton lump about it will do.

I thought people used to say it was a 2 ton lump. Has it shrunk (or is it because the Bongolow is that much lighter?)
I don't really understand the attraction of a manual Bongo - are there some useful pluses (better mpg around town for example)?

We like it (4WD manual). No gear searching or waiting for the lock up. Last time I checked we got 33mpg over a wide mix of road types. It does rev quite high at 70mph though, around 3000rpm if I recall correctly.

i find that mine revs to the same level at about 70. we have both, and the manual revs 400 to 500 more in top to attain 70mph.
i must admit the auto is better for long journeys, but around town the manual is better in my opinion,(if your legs are good) i can get top gear around town and keep at 30mph (just).
we dont notice any real difference in mpg, but havnt really clocked them. mines a tinny with the very heavy second set of seats removed so this must help.
i would love an overdrive, or a 6th gear for it, then it would be perfect, but there is enough ironwork under there already

Interesting to get your takes on the manual and 33mpg makes my ears prick up, as that is v. good indeed. It really ought to score better than the auto around town, as the latter waste a lot of fuel revving in my opinion. But being able to eat a cheese sandwich while driving, or just holding your best friends hand

, is a benefit of the auto that, once discovered, I'm loathe to lose (less wear on my knees too). But give me the open road, where the deer and the antelope roam, and the Bongos are running in lockout.
I'm becoming an old fart I fear ha ha
