Bongo Fury

Hi all
Tomorrow my Bongo is going into winter storage as I am heading back to the desert at the end of the week, to earn a few more pennies for the Bongo fund. Bongo will be stored in a barn, so in theory dry and frostproof.

Technical issues - Any suggestions as to what I should disconnect/drain/add to ensure first time starting next summer? 2.0 petrol

Legal Issues - I am planning to SORN - can I reduce my insurance cover to fire and theft only? Or cancel completely?

i would release the pressure in the cooling system (when cool) remove the expansion tank, but dont forget to put it back on come spring.

Take the weight off the tyres if possible, to avoid cracking and/or flat spots occurring. Ideally suspend on blocks at jacking points. Alternatives here: http://www.goodyearrvtires.com/tire-storage.aspx

i would try and keep insurance if possible -once lost a vehicle in a barn fire -as it happens it was a vw but just imagine if it had been a bongo.

If it is being left that long without the aircon being run for a while at least once a week you may need to get the aircon checked and possibly re-gassed when you start using it again, as without use the seals can harden and start to leak gas.

There are new rules (Or another Government cash cow) regarding Tax / Insurance / Sorn maybe it won't affect you as long as you cash in any tax before you go ..

If it's going to be left & not run at all, I'd fully charge & then disconnect the battery/s, ensure coolant antifreeze concentration is capable of coping with the coldest of winters & get the tyres of the ground.
I'd want to leave it with at least fire & theft insurance, but it may not be any cheaper to reduce it to that if you're on fully comp, worth speaking to your insurance company.

many wise words there...... I have several Classic's on my books that are stored for many days/weeks/months on end....... Most...and I say most.... are stored in garages or buildings with mains power and have built in smart battery chargers like Ctek/Aldi/Lidl where the main battery is kept topped up and not overcharged.....also most are raised on wooden blocks that are placed on axle stands.....some owners do this themselves others need assistance, to prevent tyre issues as with the best will in the world, short term storage can end up as long term storage....If I do the axle stand job I spray the chassis with ACF 50 or waxoyl where the wooden block meets the chassis, overkill perhaps...but some of these cars are rare and of significant values. If your in a remote barn with no mains then rodents can be an issue as they love coolant pipes,drive belts and interior/fold down hoods

oh yes forgot about the rodents they love interior uphostery too.
whilst on the subject mine will be outside and probably only used once a week max -is it worth getting a tarpaulin type cover.
