Radically Uneven Front Tyre Wear . . .

Any ideas whats caused this?
It looks like something has been rubbing away at the inner edge but I can't find anything remotely close enough to do this.
The other side is almost as bad but without the gashes.
Needless to say its having some new boots tomorrow but I'd like to fix the cause all the same.

Maybe the tracking is out.

Almost certainly tracking, as DBO says, or excessive camber angle - do the wheels look upright when pointing forward?

Is it the way the picture was taken, or is the tread on the outside "castling" too??

Outside edges are a bit on the lumpy side, camber looks fine but will get tracking checked. Could this be related to now being a 2WD running on a 4WD set-up or are they both the same?
This has all happened in the last 2000 miles or so - since the gearbox transplant . . . .

chris just try jacking the whole front end up and spinning one wheel by hand, what happens to the other front one.??
then continue spinning it slowly and get someone to try to stop the other from turning.

Looks like tracking is out.
Check track rod ends, wheel bearing play and steering rack security.
Wheel nuts as well.
Took 2000 miles to get there and no other problems, tracking is first choice.

The scoring on the tyre might be caused by a broken spring, I have seen a few tyres sliced by the sharp end.
It may be moving out towards the tyre when under compression, hence why it's not noticeable, might be worth getting someone to bounce up and down on the 'fender defender' and see what happens........

Thats defo a tracking issue, get the track rod ends checked for play while they have it on the ramp, did you just remove the prop to get the rwd set up or was the front diff also removed ?

I heard somewhere that these things can throw the tracking out.. More so if you roll over em centrally to minimize the bump?

Which most drivers do in any vehicle...... and many vehicles this way are suffering broken springs, track rod ends, drop links and suspension related damage as a consequence...... Initially Mr M... I would go with camber angle wrong for whatever reason and get your tracking checked.....even if you only DIY it based on the static manual setting....or borrow one of those Gunson DIY tools to see what it comes up with....

The scoring on the insides of the tyres is the outer casing worn through past the "cloth"... it's the steel webbing next and sparks! Then bang! It looks like a simple tracking issue to my none expert eyes....

If its happened since gearbox change (and yours is 4WD) then whats the connection. Is there any way they could have upset the tracking when disconnecting/reconnecting front drives shafts?

New front boots are now on but K***fit can't tackle the tracking 'cos the Bongo ain't in their 'pooter.
Anyone know the paramaters off the top of their head?
