Anyone fancy doing the Monsal Trail Tunnels during the weekend?

The best way to do all the tunnels from Greenhills would be to catch the Transpeak bus at Ashford and get off at the bottom of Topley Pike on the A6 towards Buxton. The Trail starts at Blackwell Mill about half a mile from the bus stop. I reckon its about 8/9 miles altogether to do all the six tunnels, leaving the Trail just after the Headstone Tunnel and follow the path back down to Ashford.

The big advantage of this walk is that it is FLAT, actually, doing it this way its downhill.

Anyone not wanting to do the full route could still get a taster by going up to the Monsal head pub via the path through the fields from Ashford, down the path to the railway, through Headstone Tunnel and then back to Ashford and Greenhills.

Ooh yes - even though we'll not be at Bakewell, we'll be at the rival meeting in Ashbourne that weekend. That walk would be very interesting, we know some peeps who used to live in the Blackwell Mill cottages so a lot of that area is familiar territory. Depending on timing etc, we're in.

I'm just about to send info pack out for the weekend and will include details of this walk. I have checked the bus times and the best one seems to be the 1004 from Ashford. I will ask anyone who is interested to gather at site reception at 9.30.

If you include the walk to Ashford and back this will be about 11 miles (4 hours non-stop). This may be too far for some people, so there is an alternative walk leaving at 1115 to go to the Cock & Pullet in Shelford for lunch (about 3 miles there, 3 miles back). I have told the pub to expect about 20 people.

One point about doing the Monsal Tunnels is that the Transpeak does not go past the bottom of Totley Pike.It cuts off towards Chelmorton at the top of the hill. You have to get off the Bus at the stop for the Blackwell Camp Site and go via the Pennine Bridleway. It is a good 11 Mile walk and is slightly downhill. I clocked 23 miles return from Hassop Station on the first week they opened the Tunnels,and freewheeled a large part of the return journey.Hope that this helps sort a walk out. Cheers Michael

I didn't realise the bus now turned off for Chelmorton. Its about six years since I last did it and it still went down Topley Pike then.

Just a heads up for anyone doing the tunnel walk.

There are no cafes, pubs etc on the walk (unless you want to climb up to the Monsal Head pub/caff and down again) so you need to take goodies and drinks with you.

seeing as the other meet wouldnt allow day visitors to the site . i had to gatecrash this meet instead as i was in the area, and jolly glad i did too.
what a good bunch of peeps. had a really nice sunday there in the sunshine .
thanks to ian and marrianne for organising this one its a very relaxed site with good facilities.
nice to catch up with the regulars and some who travelled from further afield.
nice to catch finally patandben, and to see how mt tank was getting on after her little bit of bother at stourport .
hope the lady from leek got home ok after her gearbox oil was dumped on the carpark .(sorry forgot your name) .
