Diesel 2.5 cutting out when slowing after motorway travel

Hi Hope some one can help

We have a 2.5l diesel automatic Bongo which cuts out after a fast journey. It does it when you come off a motorway or dual carraigeway and is then difficult to start for about 10 to 15 minutes. It is fine whilst driving but as soon as it slows down to idle all power is lost. Any help would be appreciated because all local mechanics have no idea.

Thanks

Justin

Is it only after fast runs...or do you get cut outs too after cold morning starts......
My 1st check would be the fuel cap...

The shaft seal on the injector pump can leak, allowing air in causing it to cut out. This was an issue I had with mine, it also had a lack of power and felt like the turbo wasn't coming in until over 3000 rpm but only when warmed up. Symptoms also improved when I ran it with a stong mix of veg oil.

If it is that, the seal is only a few pence. Getting at it involves removing the injector pump though.

This one has come up a few times before and has been solved. Have a search on old threads using words like 'cutting'. Suggestions given in other posts on here also point to likely causes Good luck & keep us posted. 8)

Thanks for help so far. Is the shaft seal on the injector pump different to the injector pump seals as listed in the fact sheet area. I take it the shaft seal is where the pump is connected to the engine, how hard is this to do myself. Would it leak oil from this seal. It only cuts out after fast running, We are in Devon.

Thank You

No, they're not the same seals, those ones go under some plates on either side of the pump, which is another common failure. They are relatively easy to change.

The pump will leak fuel, but only a very small amount if the seal has failed. I didn't do the pump removal myself as I was in the middle of some 'professional development' and could not spare the time. I am sure there are people on the forum that have removed them so they may well offer some advice on the job. You have to ensure you get the timing correct when refitting. When mine was removed, you could see where a small amount of fuel had been running down the bearing housing.

As Mike says, I would do a search and eliminate all the simple solutions initially before getting stuck into removing an injector pump. I would hate to give you a bum steer.

Let us know how you get on though. It's always a shame when people post problems but never get back to let us know what the problem actually was.

Good luck.

I used to have that problem.

The only thing I did to fix it was to wash the fuel cap in hot, soapy water.
Rinsed and dried thoroughly and it's been fine ever since.

The cap is supposed to breathe a bit to let air in as fuel is used.
On a motorway trip you'll use alot relatively quickly thus creating a vacuum effect.
When you lift off the accelerator fuel is " held back " ( not being pumped ) so you stall.

Something like that anyway .

Hopefully that's all you need to do.

Good luck.

An excellent simple and plausible explanation. No workshop manual required to tackle that job. =D>
