Is this a EGR valve problem? V6

I was driving along in my V6 Bongo and there was a clunking sound followed by what sounded like a blown exhaust problem. It did not seem to effect the acceleration at all but does get louder when I use the Aircon. My mechanic is not convinced that it is the EGR. There appears to be an air pump at the rear of the engine with a rubber tube leading to the inlet manifold. If he blocks this off the noise stops. Any ideas what this is and can it be repaired or disconnected with out effecting performance.

Hi there,

Maybe a pic of the offending item would help alot here. I recall there is a small washer pump size black electical box on the front of hte intlet manifold, and also under the pasenger seat at the side of the chassis a black circular plastic unit. This is the carbon cannister that filters out petrol vapour.

If you PM me your email address I can forward on some manuals on all of this.
