				Rattle/knocking noise when steering left/right

When steering left or right, particularly when turning at low speed, I can hear a rattle/knocking noise from the front wheels. Any ideas what the problem could be please? There doesn't appear to be any detrimental effect on the way the vehicle handles. Sorry, I am a non-techie so this might sound like a "how long is a piece of string" question to the mechanically minded!

4WD? it could be the universal joints

Have the same on my Bongo when turning "hard lock" L & R, just a light noise, no knocking or juddering.........doesn't happen on normal turning of the steering wheel ? Haven't been too bothered !

  should I be??

Passed MOT OK, had new tyres & tracking done...no mention of anything amiss

Thanks for your reply. Yes it's 4WD.
Similar experience as reply from rhino-wayne. Passed MOT recently, new front tyres and tracking checked. Haven't been too bothered by the noise. First noticed it after bought the vehicle 2 years ago but dealer checked it and couldn't find a problem and I haven't been too bothered by it until recently, now that noise is more noticeable and my son mentioned it when I gave him a lift last week!

As said, faulty CV joint,or power steering pump, check the PS fluid level first.

The noise is probably the Power Steering when at full lock either way.... Knocking could be CV joint as said but could be ARB bushes/Links starting to wear.... dependent on any knocking over numps/pot holes .... Nice to hear that folks are listening to noises their vehicle is making, although on a written forum,it's difficult to make a 100% diagnosis...

As a quick visual test, turn the wheels full lock (both ways) and look under the wheelarches at the steering linkages, further towards the engine you should see a rubber sleeve, is there any sign of grease escaping from either rubber sleeve? (both sides) The "sleeve" is the CV (constant velocity) boot, covering the CV joint. Often the CV Joint can fail if the rubber boot is split, and the grease allowed to escape
