Under seal your van for £15

My sprayer was gonna underseal L'oreal while she was having her scabby arse sorted out but alas as her arse was sorted on mates rates out of hours inbetween proper paying customers he never got round to coating her underside so when i got her home yesterday i done it myself for just £15.
Tools required are ramps, trolley jack, axel stands, overalls, eye protection, rubber gloves, 3" (75mm) paint brush, radiator roller, wirebrush and a dustpan brush,
This cost me £8.99 from Halfrauds
I dropped the spare wheel down and gave it a good clean then jacked up one side of the van using the trailing arm mounting point as a jacking point, this enables access to the whole inner arch without having to remove the wheel which i just covered with an old sheet, i then brushed the arches out with the dustpan brush to get rid of any loose crap before applying a good coat of underseal with the 3" paintbrush applying it in circular motions, this is the end result .
After doing the other side arch i turned my attention to the underside, i backed her up on the ramps and got to work sweeping the underside clean getting rid of any flakey stuff with the wire brush tho to be honest it was in great condition under there already, top tip is to paint all the hard to reach bits first with the paintbrush and the impossible bits above the fuel tank and up the sides of the engine with the radiator roller. Then start at the back again and do the easier bits with the paintbrush till it looks like this
Whole process took me about 4 hours to complete

nice job. soul destroying with a brush though. i should know , i've owned landrovers , and it's all that ever kept their chassis' from falling apart. must be getting old & lazy but i'm afraid the only way i do it these days is with a schultz gun. its worth trying to beg/steal (ok, don't) or borrow a compressor for the job. once prepped you should do the whole lot in less than 30 mins. ideal for spraying waxoyl into all those little crooks and nannies while you are at it too!

Totally agree with the schultz gun method, thats what i did to my old vw T25, and in a workshop its ideal but outside the house on the road ? i'm not sure the neighbours would be that enthusiastic + whilst i was under the van for 4 hours doing " essential maintenance" i wasn't getting dragged round bleeding womens clothes shops was i

aaaah but the 3 hours saved could have been put to a good use.....beer etc , for example! you always have to "take the taste away" of most automotive related products!

i'm afraid mrs m 80ngo isn't that soft, but whist she can look out the front room window and see my feet poking out from under the bongo she'll leave me be

Looks like a good job!

Did i spot a stainless exhaust under there too?
Re-assuring isn't it to know that the bongo's belly is protected before those trucks drop all that grit/salt down.

Yes you did spot a stainless zorst just the back box tho

but i did give it a coat of autosolve whilst i was under there

i can now face the winter full on without worrying about the evil salt spreaders
And to be honest i actually enjoy doing jobs like that it all helps to keep l'oreal in tiperty topery condition + i recon i saved quite a bit of £££££££££ by doing it myself

Good job - just make sure you haven't blocked the diff breather with underseal or you'll blow a seal (if you'll pardon the expression

)

Thats just put the tin hat on me ever doing it. The garage who serviced my bongo in Caerphilly offered a waxoyl for £70 today - as far as i am concerned that is £70 well spent !

It probably is money well spent, but for that have they waxoyled inside the box sections and do you know that they haven't blocked the diff breather or got wayoyl in the alternator? I'm not trying to worry you, but just pointing out that if you do it yourself at least you know what's been done and how thorough the preparation and application was.
I'm completely disillusioned with the vast majority of garages/mechanics now. Our Bongo has now been in 3 garages, including one Bongo specialist, and all three have done substandard work (to be fair this has been refelcted in a discount/no charge upon complaining but I'd rather have paid the agreed fee and had the work done properly). I'm aiming to learn how to do a lot more of the maintenance myself over the next year.
