Terminal Gearbox

Post by lyonnesse » Thu Jun 29, 2006 7:21 pm

Our SGL5 has just disgraced itself in Granada province, Spain. After an ignominious journey back to the UK (Alone. We continued our holiday without it, courtesy of insurance), we have been told it needs a new (reconditioned) gearbox. Due to the amount of time, money and care we have spent converting it into our holiday home, we have no choice but to cough up the 2K needed to fix it. We were just wondering, is this a one-off problem or have any others experienced automatic gearbox problems?

I get to hear (eventually) of all reported major problems, and this is only the second time I have heard that an autobox needs replacing.

lyonnesse,

First step is to find a good autbox repairer to confirm the bad news. Many less than capable garages will suggest replacement because they do not understand autoboxes.

Should you really need one, there are many second hand boxes out there. Try the Bongo Fury advertisers first and then look on ebay and google for alternatives.

Let us all know how you get on. OK

lyonnesse,

There is a well respected and helpful Auto Gearbox specialist in Weymouth (not too far away) might be worth a phonecall and outline the symptons. Don't know the number off hand but should be in the phone book or even on this forum if you do a search.
Good luck.

Lyonesse,
Ring Canford Cliffs Motors (Magna Mazda) (tel:701222) and ask to speak to the service manager. Ask him who they use in Poole.I think it is probably the one below in Poole but ask Magna to confirm as they will therefore have knowledge of Mazda boxes.
Magna did the factory recall on mine but it was only a simple pump replacement & they said that for any work on Auto's they use a specialist auto-tran specialist, I think he said on the Nuffield t.e.
or try one of these. (aren't I a nice helpful bloke........ with nothing better to do when the football is boring me to death!)
Good luck!
