I have a 20l petrol, there is a topic on the performance section regarding the fuel consumption somewhere.

Baring in mind this was last year when prices where cheaper.
i drove to cornwall with a full bongo and a thule box on the towbar And intotal i did 449 miles. Using £80 of petrol at £1.16lt
If im right works out at around 30mpg. if it was just me and the wife and a little lighter i might of got more to the gallon.

I haven't checked the consumption for ages...if I did, i might cuss...alternatively I might just swallow hard and say "What the heck, I could be driving summat small, horrible and un-comfy"
When we got here, I checked the consumption by filling 'till the delivery pump clicked, running it, and filling up again....same as John and Scanner...Every indicated 3/4 tank fill-up clocked in at 29-31 MPG
Worse consumption towing a caravan from UK to Bulgaria.....average????....15 MPG....OUCH....
Apart from a couple of cars which did very well on fuel, I've never had a car return more than 30 MPG...but I prefer to drive what I enjoy rather than look for the cheapest ride on the block....If fuel gets dear, use it less....currently I do 6000 Kilometers a year...one service, and still look for ways to reduce ...no point in fitting energy bulbs and burning fuel like no tomorrow and smugly saving energy in the home...It's a world belonging to all of us!

I Feel similarly to Helen. That said, you should have been getting 30mpg at those speeds on the motorway. Around town, short runs, in winter, mine might dip to 18mpg. I have a 2wd diesel, 4wd is a bit thirstier. I am put off making long trips due to fuel cost, but really I should take the bus to work to save money, and use the savings for trips out!

Might be worth a trip to a diesel specialist, plus check yr driving technique, that box is locking into top gear etc.

And its going to get worse. I bought (as many others have) my bongo on two criteria's, even though it was already eleven years old it had good spec' at a very reasonable purchase price and that I could convert to a camper van, plus I could still use it as a everyday vehicle!... but now as fuel prices start to sore the underlining issue of bongos poor economy rears its ugly head. When I park up I tend to look back at 'Mille' and think to myself doesn't she look the business but the illusion of such is soon broken whilst watching the the cost per litre as you fill up  at the fuel station.

Hi
I think there's transport, and there's the Bongo....It will cost more than a teeny car to run a Bongo, so what's wrong with keeping the Bongo for pleasure, and an "umbrella" for getting to work and doing the run to the offy. If you want to get fit...buy a bike...if it's too far, buy a motorbike, or ...maybe an old Fiat minicar, or a miserly vehicle of some description...it only needs a good set of running gear...doesn't matter what it looks like!!!and only 3rd party insurance!
Cheers

Was that litres or £s? Either way, you cannot know what your actual fuel consumption is. Brim it, run it until it needs refilling, then brim it again - that way you will be able to arrive at an accurate figure.

Where do you get your LPG at half the price of petrol? Up this way it's about 90p litre as opposed to 140p. I'm going to get LPG conversion done soon, but as the cost of gas creeps up, it's getting less attractive with a longer pay back time.

Well I am chuffed with mine. First time I have really checked it properly.
Bongo full to brim with Me, my daughter in heavy electric wheelchair and attached to rear fold down 6ft ramp, quechua 4.1 tent, camping kitchen, table and two chairs, two cadac bbq's, Fridge with food, Cool bag full of cups, plates, cutlery etc. carrier bag of food, two sleeping bags, and a very heavy large fluffy blanket, Anywhere Bed ( heavy double airbed on a frame) two bags of clothes, two oxygen bottles, and a ventilator machine, misc. bits and bobs.

Distance travelled 137 miles,

Fuel to brim before we left and filled to brim again today using 21ltr costing £31.29 at 1.49 ltr.

Miles per galleon 29.66,
miles per ltr 6.52.
Kilmetres per litre 10.50
Max miles full tank 424.

get my fuel from country wide. no cash payments and just fill up. been paying 66.3p per litre. gone up a bit now but still at half price at around 70p. also sometimes if right is worth filling up at cribs causeway if up around that area. morrisons or andy's gas is still at 68p last time i went by a week ago.

down ur way supose codford is the closed countrywide fill up

look into it

Bear in mind its already government policy to reduce the differential between LPG and Petrol as documented here http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/budget2011/tiin6330.pdf where in August this year duty on LPG will rise by 1p more than whatever the duty is on other fuel sources.

i would say its running around 20 mpg roughly and my speed was average 65-70MPH on the M1 -M18.
We got 18mpg from ours when the EGR jammed. Others on the forum have also mentioned this.
And others have noticed poor fuel economy with a dirty air filter, low ATF, pipe loose on the turbo, faulty timing or tyres inflated to the wrong pressure, or with the 'quick warm up' jammed (not all bongos have this). These are worth checking.
If there're no faults, think about how much weight you're carrying. (The AFT Bongo that Allan converted to a pick up is slightly lighter than a tintop Bongo and does about 32mpg around town.) Is there anything you could get rid of... roofbox etc?
Driving style can have an effect on mpg - some members have mentioned better mpg when they use a light throttle - gentle acceleration around town, and not going above 60mph on the motorway.

I thought LPG would be reduced by one pence compared to 'wet' fuels ..??

....The 2012-13 increase in fuel duty will be implemented on 1 August 2012.
• On 1 August 2012 rebated oils will also rise in proportion to the main rate. The duty
differential for compressed natural gas will be maintained, but the differential for
liquefied petroleum gas will be reduced by the equivalent of 1 penny per litre.

At the moment (05/04/2012) I pay 0.77p a litre for LPG ..

A point of interest CNG is 27p a litre

The way I read that is it's the differential that's reduced by 1p/litre, not the cost, so effectively the LPG has to go up by the same as petrol, plus 1p.

i.e. Petrol goes up by 4ppl, LPG goes up by 5ppl equivalent. Petrol goes down by 6ppl. LPG goes down by 5ppl equivalent
