Can anyone recomend or advise on a decent bike rack for a tintop Bongo? Would like to carry 4 bikes if possible

if you are feeling a little adventurous with a cutter and dremel... then the fiamma (for mercedes vito) rack fits perfectly. The fiama racks come with a 4 bike extension hoop.

We got a Maxxrax tow-bar mounted four bike carrier. I'd rather have had something that didn't automatically obscure the lights/number-plate. The tailboard is a hassle.
Don't worry about cutting/drilling into your van - you can always get replacement parts later!

I have a maxx raxx and cant fault it, easy to use, very safe and secure as bikes lock on to it, and I can remove it in two mins and stow in the boot etc
Just put my spare one in the for sale secton
I will try and take a picture of how I mount the trailer lighting board as mine only takes a second to fit

Thanks, thats one of the ones i'd had my eye on. What bits need cutting exactly?

Very useful posts Muzorewa and rapiddescent, thanks.
Just to add some info, these are some uprated gas struts for the extra weight that have been linked to elsewhere:

Just completing some details:
Fiamma: 02093-05- (for two bikes) extend with: Rail Quick Red, Bike Block Pro 2 & 4 for 3 and 4 bikes
Thule: 973 with fitting kit 973-18 extend to three bikes: 973-23

Fiamma VW T4 version, fits straight on, depending on whether or not you have a spoiler, in which case you'll need to 'adapt'..the Vito version sits higher than the T4..

Thanks Derek.
That's really useful: T4 versions seem to be cheaper 2nd hand! Do you have any photos of it fitted?

Another vote for the 4 bike maxxraxx. It is literally 2 mins to put on and take off (after installing the plate behind the towbar), is incredibly solid even with 4 bikes on, you can still see out the rear window (and see the bikes to keep and eye on them), you can lock the bikes to it (all supplied). I don't have a problem with the light board, the bracket takes a couple of seconds to fit on the end of the bar, after the bikes have been put on.

I do, but have never bothered to figure out how to post pics on here..why can't we just 'drag 'n drop'?

973 for us as well. Leave on permanent works well for our two bikes.

Thule 973-18 is is listed by Thule as also fitting the T4 - makes eBay searching a little broader

Here's another option for you. Aiston cycles, 4 bike towbar mounted rack for £163. Been using mine for 7 years and love it, very solid, easy to adjust and window stays clear.
