Hi there, I am planning a trip up to the Isle of Skye very soon and wondered if any of you know a good place to stop over on the way. I will be travelling up from Merseyside and don't want to do it in one drive. I was thinking maybe somewhere between the Trossachs and Fort William, if any of you have any info it would be greatly appreciated. Thankyou.

There are a few places that you can stay around Glen Coe. How about the Red Squirrel Campsite where the Scottish Section had a meet a few weeks back. No hookups though but you can have a camp fire, the Clachaig Inn is a mile up the road. If you really need a hook up there is a Camping & Caravaning Club site on the main road. Never been there though even though I am a member. There are more campsites around Glen Coe villiage itself right on the side of Loch Leven.

If you are a tad short of pennies there is even a wild camp right besides the Kingshouse Hotel. Check out the Scottish Section January 2009 meet for photos.

Don't forget to arm yourself with a spray of Smidge. http://2010.midgeforecast.co.uk/ It is not worth buying it on line as you can save yourself the postage because Visitors Centers and chemists sell it for exactly the same price.

Cheers Tony, will have a look into those places. So the rumours about the dreaded midges are true? will get stocked up with repellant.

"an evening walk ... is sheer purgatory because of myriads of midges, but it is not a thing to be mentioned aloud for fear or keeping visitors from coming."

The camping and Caravan site in Glencoe is good. Usual standard of toilets etc, and with electric hook up. If you like sitting round a fire in the evening, then its no lecky and the Red Squiffy all the way. Either would mean a good blast up for you on the first day, then a more relaxed scenic drive to Skye.

Very wise, you must be getting on a bit to have such wisdom. When I used to work in Warrington for the New Town many moons ago being young and foolish I left work at 5pm and drove none stop to Oban. Parked up for the night in my Saab on the landing quay besides the ferry then just managed to wake up in time next morning to catch it. Phew!

Woody's is on the road to Mallaig, ok if you are taking the ferry to Skye rather than going over the bridge. As good as any of the campsites in a way as there can't be a campsite in the North West Highlands with a few midges around. But for me it is a bit too far out of town as I prefer to relax in real pubs rather than campsite bars especially when travelling alone. (is there a pub up the road from the campsite?)

Still on the subject of Fort William. The last really big supermarket that you will find on your way to the Isle of Skye is in Fort William next to the Railway Station. Last reasonably diesel priced diesel is also in Fort William.

That's a lot of diesel, but sounds good so far...

Matt funny that! I was thinking the same thing! (meet up wise) but not sure when

Any advice I would give as one midge magnet to other midge magnets. Smidge all the way. I haven't been bitten since using it

Me too depending on the date. Still got the Bongo as I am having trouble with the banks now. Had to move between three different branches and two different banks in the last 2½ months thanks to the banks being shuffled around and poor service from my first choice of change.

I'd be up for a wee trip to Skye too, depending on dates.
