Hello knowledgeable ones, i know nothing about techie stuff so could someone with the knowhow advise me, i was talking with a seemingly knowledgeable chap parked in asda the other day and after mentioning mpg (worked it out when we first bought "VICTOR" by filling right up, turning clock back to 0, then driving till allmost empty ,fill up taking note of mileage and litres and doing the maths, came out at 28mpg, he said if you get your engine "mapped" it can make a big differance. First is this correct? and if it is whats the cost? where would it be best to get it done? (cornwall) any help would be wellcome. Brian.

Forgot to say "Victor" is 2.0ltr petrol.

He is right in one sense modern vehicles ECU can be remapped, however your not dealing with modern vehicles!
The diesels can't be remapped and I've not heard that the V6 or 2.0L can be either.

I agree with Geoff.
However as a past owner of 2 x 2.5 deisels,and now a current owner of a 2 itre petrol,i must say if i was getting 28 mpg,i would be VERY happy.
Ive had mine 2 yrs and have every petrol reciept for every fill up since ive owned it. I also brim it and do the maths,but only get that sort of mpg on a run,Local driving gives me 18-20 mpg

hi Brian, 28MPG is a mix of what i call longish runs and local driving, checked it three times, first time was 24, second time 28, third time was 26. The first check was after a run to lands end and back, only 80 miles, with a couple of runs up to devon and local running, the second was driving up to exmoor and running around while camping up there, the third was mostly runs to Truro,which is a 45 mile round trip, so after what youv'e said ithink i'll leave well alone and be thankful !!!!!

But if you remap a 2.0 petrol for economy, it's not going to have enough power to get out of its own way

Its not just a remap for economy, it also increases the power. My Transit went from 140bhp to 185bhp, its all to do with the power to weight ratio. Obviously if you drive it hard after a remap fuel economy wouldn't be as good as before but for normal driving its better.

My Transit went from averaging 28mpg to an average of 35mpg which when I was doing European courier work doing roughly 3000 miles a week big savings were made. My business partner had the same van, but un-mapped,and on a regular run to Italy I used £150 less in fuel running at roughly the same speeds. 70 to 80 mph

Most remaps nowadays (eg on ford transit) are for turbo engines where the ECU can be reprogrammed and change the behaviour of the waste gate on the turbo. Some use piggy back ECU's others just rely on reprogramming. Most modern engines take a cautious approach to save warranty claims etc.

Remaps on non turbo engines do very little.

Just rang CELTIC TUNING Ian, they don't work on bongo's at all and when i asked if he knew anyone else that would do it the guy said it was as RAPIDDESCENT says, non turbo petrol it wouldn't work, so another idea bites the dust.
