It is the age of the whisky that is important is it 10, 15, 20 yr old?

The whisky was gifted in 1971,I would hazard a guess that it is (counting the maturity time)about 50 Year old.

Plus, it's the time in the barrel that counts, rather than the time in the bottle.

Muzorewa is correct. Doesn't matter how long it's been in the bottle. It's age is deemed to be how old it is when it leaves the barrel and is bottled.
Are we talking 70 proof which is the same as 40% alcohol or 70% alcohol ?

Crawfords 5 star is 70° proof, around 40% ABV.

Looking on the usual whisky retailers, it appears that it's been out of production for some time, so you could expect £50-£70 for it - all depends on finding someone who wants it of course. The last one on eBay went for £46 in Dec 2012.

If you are looking to sell it, you could ask for a valuation from :

United distillers were taken over by Diagio many years ago but the monopolies commission made them sell some of their products, Whyte & Mackay bought the Crawfords brand but only did the 3 star the
5 star disappeared from the market. It's not a single malt but is known as a deluxe Whisky so it's not that valuable but it is getting rarer, so may be an investment in the future due to the rarity of the product rather than the quality. It's on a par with Johnnie Walker black label so it's a nice dram.
