In the beginning there was nothing , then God said "Let there be Light".....There was still nothing , but ,by crikey, you could see it better.

4 cylinder diesels are commonly 1-3-2-4 for balance purposes....not set in stone though

Re: firing / compression sequence diesel
Hi Mike
I presumed that, but I couldn't see it anywhere...thanks...It seems more logical than the 1342 of a number of petrol engines, and a better balance....I'll also see what can be found for the Ranger engine
Cheers

From Autodata, Ford RANGER 2.5TD WL-T. 1-3-4-2. Might be worth double checking.
Re: firing / compression sequence diesel
How does 2 manage to fire before 4 without 4 missing a stroke?mikexgough wrote:4 cylinder diesels are commonly 1-3-2-4 for balance purposes....not set in stone though
Surely it always has to be "1 outer" - "3 inner" - "4 outer" - "2 inner" unless the pistons are "1 up" - "2 down" - "3 up" - "4 down" instead of "1 up" - "2 down" - "3 down" - "4 up"?
Or am I missing something?

Hi
Firing sequences have changed over time dependent on crank configuration...however...some perusing:

Do you know the rotation of the pump.?helen&tony wrote:Hi

Re: firing / compression sequence diesel
With an up down down up crank it has to be 1342.
Stick with 2 cylinder engines, they are 1-2 1-2 1-2 whatever the crank configuration

Re: firing / compression sequence diesel
4 cylinder firing can only be 1243 or 1342. The later mainly is common especially for petrol motors, the former was used on Ford Kent Engines and others in the Ford stable too.
The WL-T engine has 2 balance shafts to smooth out vibrations which 1342 usually prevents unless the engine stroke is such that it promotes vibration and balance shafts can be used too.
As for the Ranger WLT.... Looking through my engine manual I haven't found the sequence listed, It shows the difference between WL & WL-T as well as what parts are used on WL-C engines.

Re: firing / compression sequence diesel
Hi Mike
Yes, as you said first off...the sequence is not set in stone...and as you say, there most definitely ARE different firing sequences...I remember the second 4 cylinder straight engine I took apart being a different firing order, but that was some years back
Well, yes to the other point...I couldn't find the firing order in the engine manual either...
Single cylinder motorbikes are the easiest ones for me to work out!
OR...for the discerning...a single-cylinder marine hot bulb diesel...YUM
Cheers
