Gear box

I have just had my gearbox go on a 2.5TD 4WD It had a 715 on it and I have been reliably informed that a 4WD gearbox from an earlier model would fit ie a 711 box with a simple modification. My question is what is that modification, I was told its something to do with the solenoid? Any help really appreciated.
