I purchased one of these "self inflating" memory foam mattresses. First person to try it - the son home from uni--- felt it didn't inflate enough so he added a bit of air making it into a long balloon. My understanding is that whatever is taken in by the self inflating thats it. I have to agree that it is still a hard surface but I can't see any other way to use it? Hints tips and nonsense all welcome

Many self-inflating mattresses do recommend a little manual top up, but only a little. It also depends how long is allowed for self-inflation and how long the mattress has been stored rolled up. It sound to me like yours had too much extra puff in it. To get an idea of the mattresses's correct inflation leave it laid out flat overnight with the valve open and it should reach it proper thickness. No more than a couple more puffs if any should be necessary.
