Seems a daft question but I am serious when I ask - What does the puff of smoke smell like :?:

Are you waiting for the orange coil light to go out, and maybe a bit longer, on the dash before turning the key. Don't depress accelerator pedal either

I never press the pedal, and I let the engine settle for a minute before setting off if poss. On cold damp mornings engine can misfire a bit if I load it up too soon by driving off.

Hi
my Bongo had a similar issue - blue smoke on a cold start up, but no starting problem. put up with this all summer, and two weeks ago I changed the glow plugs, now there is no smoke at all on start up. must have had one or two plugs not heating up properly. So my advice would be to renew your glowplugs.
