Lately when I start the bongo the glow light goes out then comes back on for about two seconds after the engine has started before going out again, never noticed it doing that before, is this normal?

no its not.
put a multi meter on the battery when you start the bongo.
battery at rest if its not too cold 12.5 volts.
turn key on to glow it may drop to 10-11 volts.
normal quick crank start--9 volts.
started running but glow plugs still on during short warm up---high 13 or 14 plus as the battery quickly recovers.
yours sounds like its struggling to UP the charge rate after starting, maybe a lazy batt or alternator on it way out but still just coping.

the glowplug light is a warning light for the charge system, the ecu spots the fault and triggers the light.

I seem to remember, from a thread in the dim and distant past, a modification whereby you could switch off the automatic application of current to the glow plugs (to prolong their life) and also introducing the facility of having the light come on to indicate all glow plug activity after starting when you opt to switch the glow plugs into use.
This is something that has always been on my 'round tuit' list. Maybe some Bongos are doing this mod themselves?
