head gasket went last night on the way home from work, i am so gutted, phoned mazdabongo.com £1600 without seeing it and i got to get it there somehow so bloody annoyed

Really bad luck.

What are the symptoms and what diagnosis has been done so far? Sometimes a small leak in a pipe or hose will allow air into the coolant system so it becomes pressurised and water is forced out the expansion tank overflow. This might cost a few pounds to fix and then bleed the system. On the other hand, if the temp gauge has been up into the red, then the cylinder head could be cooked too.

did not let it go into the red managed to notice it just before but steam from the exhaust and white gunk on radiator cap

Doesn't sound too good. I don't recall every hearing of anyone ever finding signs of oil in the coolant before. The gasket usually fails at a point where combustion gases can get into the cooling system. There is only one small oil feed pipe between the block and the head (sealed by an O ring) whereas there are about 20 points where the coolant circulates between the two.

It may be worth eliminating eliminating the turbo before pulling the engine apart. It has feeds for oil and coolant so a failure there could result is oil in the coolant as well as coolant getting to the combustion chamber or the exhaust.

so i got hold of this chap, dont know if anyone has had dealings with him but he sounds like he know's his stuff

Parts and services we cover when replacing cylinder head

1 brand new cylinder head casting assembled by ourselves,refaced valves,new seals,camshaft & followers checked and assembled,all clearances set,new exhaust studs fitted,new thermo sender fitted.
2 full victor reinz headset ,brand new headbolts.
3 brand new radiator assembled with fans inspected by ourselves.
4 brand new water pump ,new thermostat
5 major hoses (top/bottom rad,top/bottom engine,over starter hose,)
6 8litres of concentrate antifreeze (50/50 mix)
9 brand new ngk glowplugs
10 new cambelt

BASIC PROCEDURE
On removal of cylinder head we do full inspection of engine block,inspecting cylinder bores,block face,water jackets,core plugs,etc.
Cooling system fully checked hoses,water pipes,sealing gaskets,etc.
ASSEMBLE
Block face refaced,all tapings cleaned,all galleries cleaned, etc.
All parts assembled using manufacturies tolerances(torque settings).
Cooling system replemished and bleeding done.

I think he's well known and work is recommended by others on here.

If he's known and reputable then price wise it sounds good - I paid £1056 for cylinder head alone at reputable dealer and I had to get the van to him.
