can anyone tell me if it is legal and MOT passable to convert the offside reversing light to a fog light by just changing the bulb and rewiring or does it need to have a red lens.if it is just the bulb can some one recommend one

Fit a 382 Red bulb and wire to an illuminated switch, it is allowed (MOTT)to work independently from the side/head lamps and the ignition.

This is how mine is done, I also fitted a brighter LED bulb to the other reversing light, passed the MOT for the last few years no problem

I was worried about this as mine is the same. Not very bright and looks like its been painted on the inside.

Think I'll upgrade the bulb.

Just to clarify a white lens with a red bulb would be OK?

This is how Imperial convert theirs. The whole lot is dipped into a red coating which is quite crude but effective. The bulb is 21W so is the correct wattage and there is no problem with the lens being clear as that is how most modern indicators work.

Reverse lights are not checked as part of an MOT test anyway so even if you done away with both of them it would still pass.

Have to be careful as some (of the pickier!) mot testers, complain that it gives a 'pink' light!, and coating the bulb will usually lead to it burning the stuff off if switched on for a period

I've had to eat a minibabybel cheese the morning of an MOT, just so I could wrap the faded red bulb in some nice new red plastic.

Didn't last long, but did last long enough!

I have had a 24 led brake light bulb on mine for 7 MOT's...as a Rear Fog.... although I never use the thing...it only gets switched on just before and at the MOT test

Hi my first post as a newbie.
I want to convert my reversing light in this way as I have an unpleasant dangling fog light. I would like one of those LED bulbs but they don't seem to come with the non bayonet fitting I need to fit whats there at the moment.
Is there such a bulb or do I need to change the fitting too? Wires are all there with switch etc.

I love these forums. Just hope I can contribute at some point.

I just fitted a red bulb from my local motor factors and fitted a brighter LED bulb to the remaining reversing light, worked fine for the last two MOTs.
One thing to consider is passing the MOT and passing a VOSA construction and use check are two different things, but having had a good look at the regs I see no reason why our little mod would be an issue
