Need help from someone who has done this job...

I changed the fuel filter lastnight, following the instructions in my newly aquired manual, as far as I could..

The manual shows a primign pump on top of the filter housing.... Mine does not have such a device... it is smooth....

Does it self prime?? and if so why will it not rev or go over 25mph and spews out white smoke when I floor it. Injectors blocked??

the gasket is ok (oil and water both clean and full), and it idles fine.

I think diesel Bongos are self priming and if you run the engine gently for a while it will clear itself of any air in the fuel system and will run OK again.

Some Bongos have a primer and some don't as with mine. It is self priming ie. keep turning starter (in 6 sec bursts) until it fires. You may need to give the throttle some wellie to clear out the air and until it runs smoothly. I've done this twice with mine now and the self-priming worked fine. If after a short while your's has not cleared, suspect an air leak in the system. Maybe the gasket has not seated properly?

Given that I can't find a fuel lift pump.... if I remove the filter and let go of the housing presumably fuel spills all over the place??

Mine didn't do that last night, is there a clever valve or do I have a blockage upstream of the filter??

Don't think so. That would require a syphon effect. One sure way is to turn the engine over with the filter off. Hell of a mess to prove a point though ....

Best to fill the new filter and housing with a 50/50 mix of fresh diesel and injector cleaner - mine starts first time that way.

I now think I've got a blockage in the pump.. I checked all the fuel lines last night, and it got worse, but was better this morning.....

so looks like I'm gonna have to strip the pump down.....

Careful. Check the other thread that's running at the mo about stripping down the pump. Setting up a diesel pump requires specialist kit and knowledge so look at cheaper alternatives first like checking the in-line filter.

lift drivers seat.
where the throttle assembly is there is the injection block. Near to the engine on the front far corner there is a solid pipe leading to a banjo top from the fuel filter.
Remove the banjo via the bolt on top. belo there is a spring with a small gauze filter, remove clean and replace. Dont leave it out as this is the last defence from serious damage to the injector pump.
Im sorry if its a bit vague im working from memory and my cameras in too many bits to take a photo.
If you struggle i will have a look and try to discribe it better.
