Has anybody fitted a drain plug to their auto gearbox sump? Strikes me as a ridiculously simple solution to the problem of draining the oil?

The main reason for not having one is the filter should be cleaned/replaced at the same time making sump removal essential.

But with the sump full, getting it off is pretty messy. If it was basically empty it would be much easier.

Yes that would be a great idea to have an insert brazed into the sump. You could also keep an eye open for a second hand sump that has (as some do) the insert and plug fitted.

But given the infrequency of the job, is the benefit worth the cost? A pela type pump can suck it out instead?

Some do have a sump drain plug as standard .. mine as .. the internal 'swarf' magnet fits round it..

What I think is strange is why they never fitted a torque converter drain plug like on the old Borg Warner auto boxes .. as the converter holds more fluid than the sump it was easy to drain both externaly ..

Ours is not to reason why. Ours is but to do and die



The old Borg Warner boxes, that brings back some memories, I have in the past (long past) stripped and rebuilt a few of these on mainly Roots-Group vehicles, also their Overdrives.
