Bongo Fury

evening all, can somebody please enlighten me. I have a 96 diesel which did not have factory fitted fog lights nor a loom. I have got hold of a set of fog lights, the fog light loom, the relay and the switch. I fitted the switch and used the correct connector behind the dash, fitted the fog lights, fitted the relay and fitted the loom. the loom has two plugs one is a 2pin which plugs in just behind the driver head light. the other plug fits into the relay. I've connected the loom to the fog lights and installed the 15amp fuse in the fuse box under the bonnet. guess what the lights don't work. on the passenger side there is a thin black wire just up in the loom from light fog light plug. it looks like it has been snapped off from somewhere. Does anyone know where this goes to. I think it could be an earth but tried to earth it and still no joy with the lights. I've looked at the wiring diagrams on this site and not being an electrician not too sure. The loom does show a wire connecting to the ecu but not sure if it is this wire I have thats broken.
Can someone with factory fitted lights please have a butchers at the loom on the passenger side and follow the wire up from the fog light plug and tell me where the thin black wire goes. Or if someone knows can they please share

The Black wires are indeed earth, the connectors E2-03(nearside) and E2-04(offside) should have have one Black wire each and the other should be violet. The relay earth connection is also black and all three earths are picked up from earth connector JC-01 which is on the off side along with several other earth connections (Headlight etc.) close to the same area see the placement diagrams below;

Hi Geoff are you saying that both sides should have an earth going to these points? there was only 1 thin black wire on the loom which didnt seem to go anywhere. I will have to get underneath and have a look

The cable/wiring loom to each lamp has 2 wires one violet (+12volt) and the other is Black (earth), both the black wires should go back to the chassis at the JC-01 connector in the diagram above.

Hi Geoff silly question...... the one wire i have from the loom which is black and only on the passenger side does it mater what wire i connect it to in the earth block. pretty sure i know the answer but just checking im no electrician just a humble tin basher

The problem is which end of the wire is it ? It won't matter where you earth it provided it is the end that needs earthing! I would go ahead and earth it and see if anything changes! There are several earth points about look at the Wiring Manual for your year of vehicle and the third item in the Index links you to the relevant page for your vehicle type, the page after that one shows the physical positions.

nope still cant get the bloody things to work. There seems to be no live anywhere as if there is a fuse missing.the wiring diagram only shows the main 100 amp fuse and a 15amp under the bonnet in the middle.lights do work as I have tested them on another battery. What am I missing ? This has begun to drive me mad

When you operate the switch can you hear the relay operating or feel it click ?
You have got the sidelights turned on ?

Nope no clicking. Like I was saying the whole system seems to be dead as if there is a fuse missing. In the fuse box under the bonnet there are two big square fuses/ relays both are missing ?although left one has no cable to it could be the culprit

Locations 11 and 12 are intentionally empty.

Yep that fuse is present and ok . What else can I check

You need to work round the system in a logical order using a multimeter or 12v bulb on some fly leads so you can check the power is present. You've basically got two circuits each with a 12v feed: one that contains the switch and coil to energise the relay, and the second from the contacts of the relay to foglights. Follow these steps:

1. Turn on sidelights (fog lights won't work without this)

Circuit 1:
2. Check for 12v at the input to switch
3. Turn on switch, check for 12v at output
4. Check power to positive side of the relay coil

Circuit 2:
5. Check power to input of relay contacts
6. Check power at output of relay contacts
7. Check power at input of bulb holder.

If you have power at all those points, you either have 2 duff bulbs or the earth side of the relay or the bulbs is not connected. Of course you could have a break in the wiring loom, but following the steps above will take you round the route that the power is going such that any breaks in the circuit will be apparent.

thanks all for your help . Status update
removed the loom today and checked all plugs wires etc. the earth wire looked a bit ropey so I followed it back up the loom and replace also added a new earth on the other end. fitted the loom back and started checking. I have a live at the switch, a live at the connector and a live to the relay. lights still do not work. I took the cover off the relay and activated it the lights came on. Right I thought faulty relay. changed the relay and still don't work but do if I manually operate the relay.????? does this tell any experts anything because its confusing the hell out of me
