£38 paint kit, is there enough for this ?

Next spring I plan to sort out the bonnet of the Bongo, when dry seems best. Around the washers I have lost the layer of lacquer and the under paint is tarnished as well. Paint Code 12B. I am planning to buy a paint kit from the shop with the aerosol and wonder if this kit will have sufficient aerosol paint and lacquer to spray and cover this Bongo sun burn. Not sure why it decided to go funny here as the rest of the paint work is mint. (I reckon on screen wash having had an impact over the years)

Here is a picture

Thank you.

I'm not sure it would be, I used a tin and a half of paint to do my spoiler, did give it quite a few coats though . I would get an extra can just in case. Being a bongo you will always have use for spare paint

don't paint a bonnet with aerosols. Even if you can make it look half decent it won't last as they don't have the same uv protection properties as professional refinishing products

Ive done a few panels in the past including a bonnet with aerosols and they've still looked good 4-5 years down the line, suppose the other option would be to vinyl wrap it :D give it the carbon fibre look 8)

I agree. The can option is no match for the real thing, the lacquer especially I've found. I'd have thought it would be the cheapest bit to get done by a bodyshop especially if you're Happy to have the washer jets just masked off? If it's any consolation, my bonnet is showing similar signs.

I would actually leave it if I did not think further erosion is on the cards as it is purely cosmetic and I have no foreseeable plans to sell. So with that in mind thought protecting it would be better than leaving it for the paint to peel as has done the lacquer. I am under no illusions that a spray can cover up would not look anything as good as an entire panel spray job.

I am sure a pro spray job would look better and cost a massive amount more. :) What's the facts on that? £100.00, £200.00, £300.00 ?? Also hassle factor of Bongo being away for a day. If it was £100.00
I could be swayed.

If I was to sell it I would get it sorted professionally. Kloonsy what's the damage likely to be for a pro paint job, if it is against rules to discuss approx costings you could PM me if you wish ?

Thanks

Vinyl wrap or bonnet bra might be interesting workaround solutions. I'm all for a bit of experimentation with these old girls. :-)

I've got some spare carbon wrap if you want some to give it a try? been thinking about doing the bonnet for a while but never quite got round to doing it.

I would search "Bongo Bonnet Bra" online and see another Bongo forum bloke had problems with destroyed paint/erosion/fade from trapped screen wash between it and the bonnet paint.

Yea but no but......if you can find my old posts on here you'll see I was concerned about that very thing some years before that post on Bongofurum. BUT, your paintwork seems already to be in that condition, which is why I thought it worth considering. The main problem is they don't completely cover the bonnet so it depends on where your paintwork has gone. The sasquatch offer if free vinyl wrap sounds interesting and very generous also

I reckon a friendly paint shop might spray it for under £100

Bonnet bra isn't going to make worn paintwork significantly worse, but even so, it stops short of washer just so will leave most of the damage visible. Shiny new respray is unlikely to be a perfect match for the rest of the paintwork on the van. My suggestion would be to find a second hand bonnet in the same colour and just swap it over. There are plenty of breakers around from as little as £40: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Mazda-Bongo-F ... 3a9cdd3f49

You may need to factor in courier costs or arrange a relay or just keep an eye out for one being scrapped in your area. You could probably recoup 50% of your costs by selling the old bonnet on eBay. That way, it should work out cheaper / easier / quicker / better than using aerosols.

Or you could have a big adventure like I did: buy a compressor and spray gun 2nd hand great nick off eBay, and spray it properly yourself without all the hassle or removing it.. It's an easy panel, colour mismatch won't be serious or matter much, and my compressor has made doing tyre pressures a breeze, allowed a mate to respray his motorbike, blow dust out of old computers, brakes etc. and using a paraffin gun I degreased my engine with gunk. Go on, have an adventure :-)

If anyone does want some to try it on their bonnet let me know. Got a fair amount left and will happily let it go to a fellow bongoer for free :)
