Bongo Fury

Just done a few hundred miles in bongo. Half way through we had what I can only describe as a dry bearing/ diff type noise coming from front of 4wd bongo. Only on acceleration from low seed ie roundabouts, once at higher speed could not hear.Checked oil gearbox oil all fine noise still there. Stopped over night and next morning noise had gone. Drove 150miles home and still no noise.
We have recently had new cv joint done and think they had problems getting joint off half shaft.
We have a bad vibration now that we did not have before and it does not feel like wheel unbalance. Might be wrong but could it be bent half shaft?, but what was the noise and why not there now

Have you checked / replaced front diff oil? Have you recently had new tyres on the front or rear? It could be a sticking brake caliper or sometimes even a bit of gravel can get trapped and rub against the brake disk.

Might be worth checking that the big nut holding the CV into the hub is tight. If that is loose it could explain your symptoms.

jack up both front wheels and spin them independently, even though its a 4wd they will spin if done slowly, this may show up a wheel bearing etc. try tipping the wheel top to bottom with a pry bar like on the mot test.
check the inner drive shaft boot isnt leaking oil from the diff, or give it a gentle squeeze. check the diff oil level, the diff/driveshaft bearing maybe on it way out.
check the centre bearing half way up the front prop shaft.

ive done all the above myself on mine -------- and i cannot find my noise either which sounds exactly the same as yours, sometimes there sometimes not, mostly on the throttle. i will let mine develop.

I'll go with Simon on tyres. I have had similar on a couple of cars, one time on the way to Switzerland. We stopped at a hotel and had the car shipped to a local garage. They went all over it and couldn't find a thing (well, it was a Mercedes garage, and they probably hadn't come across anything as complicated and sophisticated as a new Fiat Uno ). Problem still there, and finished the journey. Took one front wheel off at a time, replaced with spare, and found the cause, or rather cured the problem....The fault was an almost invisible imperfection in the sidewall on the inside...not surprised the garage didn't find it! I've had that on 2 different vehicles.
Anyway...good luck in your quest!

Rear tyre just gon flat just replaced and wire coming out of tyre.That could be the cause.

Thanks brian will see if has gone now. New tyre needed as rear is totaly trashed lucky it didn't blow as we drove back on motorway from London. To me it looks like low pressure has caused it as tyres do not keep pressure well. Must have gone down then maybee overheated ? I did check it before we set of down there! Could it have been over inflated?

Worried now what pressure do people inflate to. I use 38 rear 36 front. Is this to high!

I think it's a case of experimentation...lots of different opinions, and thy're probably all correct, because people carry different amounts of fuel, and tools. I only use 1/2 a tank , mostly, and don't carry a lot of baggage, and in over 10 years I've used 32 PSI all round

The official tyre pressures are very low.

Front 180 kPa = 26.1 psi
Rear 240 kPa = 34.8 psi

Just looked at the damaged rear tyre again and besides the wires coming out on the inside edge there is quite a large flat spot on the tyre. Could I have had a sticking break and the noise when setting off from junctions was the tyre dragging. Strange how we did not have the noise the next day when we drove the couple of hundred miles back home. All we had on the way home was a bad vibration.

Goodness knows...the only thing that might hide the noise is the differing textures of road surface...the vibration will be from the fault area when it is in proximity of the road! Each time it hits the road area, it makes a small difference in feel once every revolution = vibration
