Power steering rack repair seal kit
Hi,
I go to a garage I trust they said I need to order steering rack seals, or a new steering rack.
on the Bongo Fury store website, power assisted steering seals cost £45 before member discount and on Bongo Bits they are £67.95 for 6 seals, do you know if there is any difference ?

Some say there is an additive you can put in the fluid
To stop leaks
Carnt remember what it's called

Re: Power steering rack repair seal kit
Worth a try
Think you can use brake fluid or something aswell
If it don't work you can flush it out when new seals are fitted
I'd go with the Lucas stuff
Does come in different size bottles

If the seal softener does not work .. someone remarked that changing the seals is not the easiest of jobs and time consuming ..
Others opted for a guaranteed rack ..

Re: Power steering rack repair seal kit
The steering rack uses normal ATF (Dexron3) fluid ..
IF .. you changed the seals any Lucas stuff would be OK to leave in without physically flushing any rements out ..
There is auto box / rack flushing stuff available .. unless doing a proper fluid 'pump out' change I would be reluctant to use that in an auto box as it would be impossible to remove 100% of the flusher ..

No - it's Dexron 3 Auto transmission fluid, NOT brake fluid.Gasy wrote:Worth a try

Re: Power steering rack repair seal kit
ive tried twice to recon racks , its a nightmare job which requires loads of special tools, and a bit of knowledge . ive not found anywhere that sells the steering column seal on its own, and the full kit is very expensive. both went in the bin. .
george sells racks http://www.bongospares.co.uk/. see what his prices are like, new and second hand, it will save you a lot of time and effort. .
you can fit one in an hour, then get the tracking done.sorted.

No the trick I mean is you put a bit of brake fluid in with your power steering dex3
And the brake fluid swells the rubber o rings stopping the leak

Re: Power steering rack repair seal kit
My bongo had a couple of adviseries last year on degrading / split steering rubber 'boots' .. rather than just the rubbers I bought all new bottom ball joints .. track rood ends .. and drop links to fit ..
I generally do my own repairs but with health issues (mine and my housebound son) when i took it to my regular guy (George) for the MOT I presented them to him to change the lot ..
I collected the Bongo as he was closing Friday night .. I paid for the labour and new MOT .. and drove home (about a mile) ..
Or tried to drive home .. it was virtually un drivable .. tossing me all over the place ..
I phoned George .. gone .. So I struggled next day to our local ATS for a 'free' tracking check .. the guy set up the lazer .. he looked at me and asked how on earth I had managed to drive it at all ..!!
£29 later the bongo drives like a dream .. moral is .. Don't trust garages ( have I said i don't anyway) and be 100% certain the tracking is set up right after any work is done ..
Oh .. I popped in and had 'words' with George .. who informed me they did not have modern tracking equipment and had set it up by counting how many turns when removing / fitting the track rod ends..!!

I bought a guaranteed rack from Gary at Western Steering in Bristol, excellent service and advice and have booked it in to be changed at my garage and have the tracking done
