Bongo Fury

Having just successfully connected a £8 bluetooth ODBC interface to my Honda Jazz to output coolant temperature, throttle position, fuel flow etc etc as a live display on my phone/tablet, I return to the prospect of tapping into the Bongo

Excuse me for any repetition BUT where is the ODBC1/ ODBC2/ ODBC x.x??? plug?

I seem to recall the Bongo was not set up for interrogation using anything other than your ears and eyes but I am an iquisitive cove at the best of times and would like to explore all avenues especially any feed of AFR or lambda...

I have a stand alone Bosch-based AFR/Lambda monitor that can output a voltage to spoof the narrow-band lambda sensor on the bongo, if the narrow band is not working I can identify this if the AFR is restored when the spoofed feed is used [I just need to get a second lambda sensor mounting collar TIG'd into cat bypass pipe

RELATED SUBJECT: anyone know what the oversize crush down exhaust gasket is called (part no??) it is approximately the same size as the firering gasket between the exhaust manifold and the downpipe???

it is a weird one, it is NOT the same socket as my Honda.....need a pinout to convert it to ODB, hopefully (the one in my hand)

is the end of it really, nothing to view in realtime sadly!

NB the torch is in the place your flare should be, highly illegal I guess to carry them in the UK but quite a show-stopper if you are accosted by a road rager who has his window open!

It's a Ford/Mazda-specific connector and protocol so is not ODB/OBD2 compliant. Very few people have managed to get anything meaningful out of it. Let us know if you have any more luck.

Please let me know if you have any success. I have been trying to trouble shoot a fault in the engine management system on my 2004 2 litre for some time. It is very frustrating that Mazda fit a diagnostic plug that's about as much use as a chocolate teapot! I now face the prospect of replacing the engine sensors one by one until the check engine light stays off. With a lambda sensor at £229, this could get very expensive.

check the lambda operation over the length of a journey with a recording software/usb oscilloscope, you can get the fault codes out by using a wire jumper in the socket and an LED, the operation of a lot of other gubbins can be monitored if you have a pet electronics engineer nearby! (Thanks Nick)

John, that link doesn't seem to bring up anything. Do we need to register to be able to log in? I'm interested to find out more about the diagnostic socket as I'm planning to build a small switch box with LEDs to allow the various pin configs to be connected up. I'm not keen on the idea of shorting out pins on the socket with a paperclip as its bound to end in a puff of smoke and some expensive damage . Thanks.

Would it not be easier to buy a Japanese reader?...I'm not sure if anyone has tried, but there must be one available, perhaps it was used in conjunction with Ford?....If there's a reader, perhaps it could be copied , somehow, if it's no longer in use.

Helen, there is the proper Mazda code reader referred to in the engine manual which I'm keeping my eyes open for. Other folk have had some success with a generic ELM327 reader linked to Ford's ForTran software.

Any more info on this since the reader will need a wiring adaptor to fit in the Bongo plug.....
