Actually it sounds really scary for VW and for all (our?) funds invested in them. What possessed them to do this, and what other skeletons are in the cupboard (did I hear they replace some faulty parts with no quibbling as they know about design defects and don't want their bullet proof reliability reputation dented).

Makes me glad I have a cheap and honest old oil burner that doesn't pollute much because I don't do many miles in it.

Makes you wonder if Skoda, Seat, Bentley, Bugatti etc are also affected

Hi,

There were rumours about this some time ago, I think it came from one of the engine tuning people. Also talk of VW/Audi buying lots of ex lease vehicles and crushing them to help artificially inflate the second hand prices of certain models.

it goes like stink - so it must be chucking crap out

I know the van has sports suspension and brakes etc

but honestly - it goes like a rocket ship

my diesel goes like stink aswell

everytime I put my foot down a big puff of black stuff emerges lol

at night is the worse - it really highlights the crap coming out in others head lights behind me

I do feel for them

£30k is a hell of a lot for a van when you think it could buy maybe 5 or even 10 Bongos. And I'm getting on in years and love not going like stink - it means I don't have to get tangled up with those who want to. El Bongo has more than enough power to keep up and tow loads etc. I reckon too that if it's doing 32mpg on a run (41 mpg on one occasion by sticking to no more than 60mph) then whatever it is chucking out, it is doing it sparingly

Like you, I notice particulate smoke in the headlights of cars behind me at night, but only if I'm revving the engine hard. I very rarely take it above 2500rpm as that seems the best compromise for getting the engine working adequately without taking it into the zone where it appears not to be fuelling/combusting efficiently. I also wonder how many other drivers of diesel engined cars would, if they looked in their rear mirrors when revving the engine hard, see particulate smoke in other cars headlights. The diesel engine is valuable for the torque it produces in a relatively narrow and low rpm band, rather than any peak power at high rpm. I sometimes wonder if some high powered diesel car drivers may have forgotten that.

And the VW doesn't have electric blinds or roof - how crude a spec is that

I had a VW T5 Trendline, and that was only 130bhp.
For a 2.5 6 speed it went like the clappers,
but it was a van, and for me very much fast enough.
There were people who were re mapping theirs over 200 bhp
I always thought why... if they wanted speed, why not buy a car,
because for me, a van doing over 100 mph wouldn't be a happy place.
And they will do over 100mph very easily..

That's how I see it. I'm all for a comfortable chug with an automatic gearbox and all those little handy extras the Bongo has. If I wanted speed, I'd get something made for doing that kind of stuff but then, surprise surprise, I'd be having to deal with all those youngs bucks and birds who do it so much better (or worse, depending on how your look at it ). Nope, I'd rather show them the back end of a Bongo with a hanging sign in the rear window that says 'Old age travellers enjoying life'. Only the exceptionally impatient fail to get the message with that clue

I did take the Bongo to 100mph indicated once, when there was no wind, just to see if it could do it. It didn't struggle getting there, but I wouldn't have wanted to handle a crosswind or make any sudden moves. Once was enough for me

I don't worry too much about it all the while that governments can chop and change between encouraging diesel and demonising it and vice versa with petrol.

Might be a good time to buy VW shares, though. They are bound to creep back up. Their vans are probably still the best lookers of a bad bunch of eurocrap. If it wasn't for the language and the earthquakes, I'd go and live in Japan to enjoy the choice of vans.

Yup, this demonising of diesel is a bad example of human pack mentality. It may in hindsight have been daft to allow/encourage a headlong rush by the market into diesel powered cars (though saving the planet through lower co2 emissions is not an argument to be dismissed lightly) , but where (fuel efficient ) load lugging is required, it has to be diesel. And whilst particulates and nitrous oxide may be health issues for those living in urban areas with traffic congestion, they are not issues on non urban roads especially where there is no congestion. Urban areas should work to promote non car travel, not just focus on diesel.
