Bongo Fury

Hi there can anybody help?
I have not long purchased a very nice white Mazda bongo 2.5 v6 petrol auto!
I am a windsurfer and fully intend to chuck my kit in and head to the coast as much
as possible but there is a problem..... I have used it for work most days and I can only
ever managed 24 mpg [/b], has anyone got a 2.5 v6 and has taken it on a 3 hour + run to the
coast and if so what mpg can I expect?

Hi, and a warm welcome to the Forum.

Your MPG sounds about right for commuting, you may get near 30 on a good day.

Quite a few go for a LPG conversion but you'll need to do the sums based on your mileage and how long you plan to keep Bongy.

It is important to bear in mind the purchase price (compared to, say, a VW), low depreciation and all round versatility of the Bongo when doing the sums.

mpg sounds in the right ball park for commuting, not bad if it is lots of town work. On a long run at steady speed it will be a little better, higher up in the 20s. It all depends on your speed! 24 mpg sounds pretty good for commuting. I've done longer runs in mine and got not much over 25. As someone wise once said, if you're looking for fuel economy you've got the wrong vehicle

We were stuck in a huge que behind a tower crane on the A9 in Scotland took us 60 miles to finally get near it to overtake it, travelled at approx 40-45 mph, did 26 mpg on LPG, running on LPG achieves normally less mpg than running on petrol so would expect 28 mpg if I had been running on petrol, I would be very surprised if anyone managed to get 30 mpg on a V6, normally I drive at 60mph I would only achieve 23 mpg on LPG.

I've had my V6 for five years and have never even dreamt of getting 30mpg from it. Most I have ever done is about 23mpg with a very light foot on a long run. normally I get 18/20 around town. On gas I get very slightly less but at present I'm only paying 39.9p/L so that is neither here nor there.

Totally agree Brian, 56mph-26mpg, 60mph-24mpg, For every mile per hour over 60 the mpg goes down really rapidly, I just paid the £1200 for the conversion to LPG, forgot about the money I'd spent, purchased LPG at the garage, around £40 for 260 miles (a bit less than that at the moment) and never gave mileage another thought.

Some people suggest working out LPG conversion costs in relation to annual mileage to judge the economics of the conversion..

I pay 47p a litre for LPG .. the conversion costs are long forgotten when you pay £35 to fill your 75 litre tank .. !!

Best I've done on a long run is 24mpg. Round town I get 19mpg on average.

our V6 does about 22 to the gallon on Vboost petrol and about 20mpg on the regular petrol, luckily we have lpg aswell that puts a real big smile on your face when you fill up, get it on the gas.

Which part of the coast do you visit?

I go to Wales a bit, a little surf spot called Llanrysted, but when I am not land locked in Birmingham I windsurf loads in Weymouth ( Portland Harbour ).

Probably common knowledge but these things can effect your MPG on a petrol (there could be more):

Air filter cleanliness
Spark plugs
Oil
Tyre pressures
Tyres themselves (some fair worse than others on fuel efficiency)
Badly aged spark plug leads (the sparks cause deposit build up/ spark resistance)
Driving style - 55mph will give you the best mpg, at 70mph expect 20-25pct less mpg

Might be worth you putting a can of BG44K through the system (in the petrol tank so it is very easy). I rate it for petrol and Diesel (Diesel version is BG244) It cleans deposits from valves, combustion chambers, pistons, fuel lines etc. Read up on it the vast majority of users notice a difference, of course use it at your own risk/consideration but I rate it highly with zero negative effects.

Not saying you will end up with 36mpg ! But it all helps.

I use Millers Petrol/Diesel Eco max as well in every tank. This is less potent than the BG44K kind of cleaner (it is an octane/cetane booster with cleaners so akin to putting 97 RON petrol in or Supreme diesel but a MUCH cheaper way of doing it, you just poor a measure in the tank, easy.) but I find my vehicles run smoother and quieter with the suggested amounts in the tanks. It is not a small difference on the Bongo. (quieter, smoother and more power)

I get up to 43MPG on a long run with a diesel Bongo. Significantly less on short stop/start journeys but I do not do many of those in the Bongo thankfully.

I bet you could eat your dinner off the insides of my engines.

Is the Bongo particularly bad for fuel consumption remember its a 2 ton brick
I ran an Audi a6 2.6 V6 (96) for 10 years.
fuel consumption varied between 21 and 25mpg town, towing, topbox, no topbox.
THe Audi 100 (87, 7years) a 5 cylinder 2.2l was much worse 19 towing 22mpg max
Don't compare it to a modern engine. only consider brim to brim info
not that i'm refering to VW "engine management" systems.
Do car computer MPG match with Brim to brim?
