Registering with the DVLA

Post by crl5 » Fri Apr 15, 2016 8:43 am

I have recently bought my first Bongo, which was professionally covered to a Campervan by a company that specialises in this. I notice from the V5C that it has been correctly registered with the DVLA as a camper van. However the V5C says that it has two seats (including the driver seat). It actually has fitted a back seat for two people (with seat belts) which opens up into a bed. Do I need to inform the DVLA and if so how do I go about this? (it is insured for 3 passengers and the driver). Any help would be greatly appreciated (I want to get this sorted before I take it abroad in June).

Colin,
I assume the rear seat is either a cut down normal one or a rock'n'roll bed.
Neither of these are likely to be crash tested, so "legally" probably not allowed to class them as seats on the v5.
I may be wrong, but it was one of the reasons i opted to not fit a r'n'r bed as i wanted to use the van daily and to carry passengers on the rear.
I may be wrong of course. I'm sure you could get the v5 changed without too much grief, just not sure about the legal issues if in an accident with people sat in the rear.

They don't have to be crash tested. So long as your insurance is aware of the conversion, and it has an MoT which covers the seatbelts in use then all is OK. All the details on the DVLA web site if you need them.

Have a word with your local freindly MOT station about a seat belt installation check , you may need to have one done and then send off the V5 to the DVLA , usually a few photographs don't go a miss . Another alternative is to contact the conversion company , they may sort it out for you .
