Help! Losing Coolant in Scotland
On our way back south (via Peebles) and the Coolant alarm started squeling (many thanks Haydn!) and coolant is pooring out round the oil filter - I'm guessing its a core plug gone - are the core plugs on the left side? I cant see past the turbo/shroud.
Digital temp guage from a stud at the rear of head said 74 at the time - we were sitting it traffic and it had been around 76 previously.
Got recovery coming to take me to Peebles - anyone know of any bongo specialists around there? I think Edinburgh will be on lockdown with the festival starting...

there are 2 small gauge coolant pipes that cool the turbo that are just above the oil filter, or on the chassis rail is the supply pipe to the rear heater, it maybe just one of these, all fixable on the road side.
just the bleeding to sort properly, then you should be ok to carry on.

I could not see the bottom of the turbo. Will check with light in a bit. Just got a lift to peebles. Will have to fix or get it fixed somewhere before going south next w/end.
Definitely not the rear supply rails... shame easy to get to. But they have all been replaced. .. at least once.
This beast has a weird galvanic corrosion thing going on. Rots everything from the inside. Nearly all the core plugs gone over the years. Every coolant change I run the mains hose through for ages.... never runs clear.

dont want to jinx things but rusty coolant that wont clear is usual after the engine has run hot, it maybe a metal expansion thing it seems to loosen all the crusty crap that builds up over time.
red coolant may help with this as it coats everything inside the coolant system to isolate the dissimilar metals that can cause problems, maybe use a coolant system flush, then a new mazda stat and new well mixed coolant.

Pm "mountain goat", I seem remember him mentioning a garage in Edinburgh, the guy was a former bongo owner. He may be still around.

Re: Help! Losing Coolant in Scotland
Well you nailed it. Got another look yesterday in decent light and although the coolant was running down the block it wasn't from the block at all. Nice little pencil jet clearly visible on the top side (DOH)... and flowing fast just from gravity and an open header tank. Now to find that pay on lush and see if I can get a new one but at least some metal epoxy or extra ribbing will get us home.Northern Bongolow wrote:there are 2 small gauge coolant pipes that cool the turbo that are just above the oil filter, or on the chassis rail is the supply pipe to the rear heater, it maybe just one of these, all fixable on the road side.

Re: Help! Losing Coolant in Scotland
My Haydn Temp sensor now rarely goes above 86C for reference in any type of driving conditions. 74C on a Bongo does not typically suggest overheating/danger so the coolant alarm spotted it early. A diesel Bongo could have a nominal temp of between 81 and 97C when fully warm and or under load and still be operating normally.
Of course if you have other signs like low coolant check into it. Good luck.

Probably a Ford / Mazda Dealer or a 4x4 repair shop , the part will almost be the same as the Ford Ranger with the wltd engine also some of the Mazda B series etc.phedders wrote:Looks like I need 13-530A "PIPE,WATER IN -T/C" from http://lushprojects.com/bongopartsmk2/c ... o=.html#16.
