Starting problems

Just recently I have had difficulty starting my bongo after a short journey. My mechanic says that the fuel pump seems fine and he didn't have a problem with starting up but could be an intermittent problem. Today after a short journey I couldn't get my bongo to start but the engine turned over fine. I waited for about 20 minutes and tried again. This time the engine just about fired with lots of smoke and with some hefty revving I managed to get away and back home. I had a recon pump fitted 8 months ago but as I said the mechanic says this seems to be working fine.Any suggestions would be appreciated before I ask the garage to take another look.

Quick update - engine turns but will not fire at all,

Started first time this morning but I'm now afraid it will play up again when I take it out!

this type of non starting on diesels when warm could be the tank cap / tank breather blocked. to test try running round as normal but with the cap fairly loose or even off, or fit one of the cheap push fit replacement caps available from car shop and petrol stations. if the loose cap thing works come back and we can advise on unblocking the breather on the tank.
as the fuel tank empties it stops the fuel going to the pump so vacuums in the tank.

We had a similar problem a few years back but that was just after fitting a new (and primed) fuel filter. Putting the old one back on sorted it. Thinking of the easiest and cheapest things first, then the fuel filter might be worth a look if the filler cap doesn't sort things.

Many thanks for your replies - I'll try the fuel cap suggestion first and then fuel filter. I should add that the difficulty starting seems to be primarily when the engine is not fully warmed although not exclusively. I have also had a couple of occasions recently when even after starting easily from cold the engine has needed to be revved to keep it from cutting out. Whenever these things happen there is always a lot of smoke until the engine settles down. I'm not mechanically savvy so anything other than basic things I will need to ask my mechanic to check. Once again - I appreciate all the help you can offer.

Would this have been supplied as part of the the recom pump I had fitted or is it a separate item?
