Bongo Fury

Hi.

I have a just bought a 2l petrol tin top. When I switch the air con on there is a loud squealing.

Lifted off the engine cover and can see it's the belt making the racket. The pump is sort of jumping round slowly. The belt seems pretty tight. Switch off AC and the belt and tension pulley move round freely and silently. The belt looks pretty new.

Do you reckon it's belt tension or a knackered pump? Can the pumps be serviced?

Just bought the Bongo privately, so will be a bit hacked off if the pump is shot!

Sounds like the compressor is shot mate.
Bongo spares or similar for secondhand unit`s your best bet.

I went for a run on a stretch of dual carriageway. Turned it on and it squealed like a stuck pig for a few hundred yards, but then it quietened down to silence. Very cold air coming out the vents.

Squealing came and went after that. Mainly under power.

So perhaps the pump is not shot and it is the belt/tension? I saw what looks like a tensioning adjustment nut on top of the tension pulley assembly?

Temp gauge is not working either. That should be a a simple one though!

Really pleased how well she runs though. Getting bongo waves is nice

One way to find out , get the spanners out!

there is a little idle tensioner pulley with its own bearing it could well be that

got mine from a mazda dealer about 15 quid as i recall

I think it's definitely the belt slipping on the air con pump that's making the noise. You see the pump jerking round for a bit before it starts spinning properly.

Now is it because the pump is stiff or the belt not tight enough? As you say - spanner time!

A recon pump is only £65, so not the end of the world. Just a little miffed the seller omitted to tell me. I would have got one on order (along with a temp sender!).

Any one swapped one out? Something must leak out when you undo the pipes!

Air con drive belts need to have the correct tension, the compressor/pump puts a heavy load on the belt/s when the clutch kicks in , usually you are looking at 10/15mm deflection on the longest run of the belt. Also make sure that the correct profile belt has been fitted

Fixed! Tightened up the belt tensioner. Squeal gone and lovely cold air front and back

the air con tensioner has an easy to swap and cheap bearing if that if worn out.....

6301-2RS is the bearing.... for future reference

I put a new belt on to be sure. The new belt is a better profile. The old one was skinnier and obviously pretty knackered once I got it into the light.

All good now. Lovely silent cold air
