Could be the Glowplug for that cylinder has failed, but probably worth replacing them all unless you know when it was last done ?

If the coolant has dropped below the bottom of the header tank the system will need to be bled.

If it was a private sale I doubt you have any comeback, but do ask a solicitor if you can have a free half hour. Most do that.

Good luck.

Hmm... Sounds like some right dodgey 'repairs' have been done to your Bongo.

I would suggest addressing the lack of bleed pipe before driving any further, if you can't bleed it trouble will follow, if damage hasn't already occurred.

I'm no techie expert, but it's possible there has been an overheating/head issue and someone has fitted a Ford Ranger head and not addressed the original problem. Then sold it to you.

With luck someone more knowledgable will chip in.

Might be worth looking at the online tool https://www.check-mot.service.gov.uk/ for checking previuos MOTs. It can give you an idea of the advisories the vehicle has had in the past. Just add your reg number into the search box. Hope you get the Bongo sorted.

In answer to your question above - I think that a compression test will reveal if you have cyclinder head leaks without engine being dismantled - hopefully someone can confirm and that I'm right?

Oh, and is that the correct fuel cap - strange it was 'new' on on old vehicle - has it been replaced with the wrong one?

We discussed the possibility of buying another engine to have fully rebuilt as we feel it's too late for this engine, I have rebuilt some basic engines over the years but the video I watched with all these worm gears scares me somewhat... my brain say's crack on but I'm much older now and hurt due to my disability so I can't be changing engines myself...

..."IF" I were to get another engine to rebuild I couldn't honestly say I know anyone I trust enough to have the tools/skill/knowledge to rebuild and fit one,
on that note... is there anyone on here who can and who will?

And... what will be needed to rebuild...
Engine (with correct head)
Re-con fuel pump
belt(s)
Head Gasket
Head bolts
These guys http://www.bongospares.co.uk/shop/engin ... w-mileage/advertise on the Bongo Fury site and would be my first port of call for a secondhand or rebuild unit. I've not used them but others here can chip in. As you'll see from my number of posts I'm just a new lad on this board.

Bogno Spares are very well thought of on here.

They will supply and ship parts or have a workshop and considerable expertise if you want them to do the job. 8)

I might be wrong but I'd have thought those oily glow plugs are normal. Diesels are Dirty - you put golden oil in the engine, turn the engine on and in 5 mins the oil is black  It's just the way diesels burn fuel.

Also found bits on the gearbox dipstick    will have to drain and re-fill and see if it lasts long enough to find a replacement (HINT: anyone have one near me?)... what gear oil do I need please and how much?

As far as I can see it holds 7 ltrs and you want Dexron 3 or higher.

for next - "easy test" crack head - open cap of "cooling tank" - take condom - wear on "cooling tank" - start and run engine - if condom only pouted, dont burst - all right! Image
