Temp Gauge not working

Post by EllieD » Wed Apr 25, 2018 3:04 pm

Hi All,
my Temp gauge suddently stopped working; initially the internal heaters weren't working either but these are now, but still not temp gauge movement.
Any ideas?

Possibly the connector has failed, its not uncommon, the sensors are at the front of the engine with a single Green wire going to a push on connector on the diesel its easily visible from the drivers side.

It's petrol 2.6 - when you say connector.....?

I've since topped up engine coolant and no change...

if the temp guage stopped working and the heaters were not working your thermostat may be jammed open, might be an idea to change that anyway as it is good practice, not a difficult job and its much cheaper than a new temp guage. Just make sure and bleed the systeme correctly or that will give you more problems

sorry meant to add were the heaters blowing cold air or just wouldn't switch on at all?

Thanks! I think they wer blowing cold air initially.... been advised to start with changing the sensor; will then give the thermostat a go!

when a thermostat jams open it means the coolant in the system will just keep circulating causing it to stay colder for longer, then after a few (or alot) of mins it will start to get warm and then you'll get hot air (eventually) but it usually doesn't let the engine temp sensor get hot enough so the guage will just read cold, but changing the two wont do any harm. If the thermostat is stuck open thats better than it stuck closed as that would cause your engine to overheat very quickly.
hope you get it sorted soon as neither a bad temp sensor or themostat is a good thing

also did the temp guage suddenly stop working whilst you were driving it or was it the next day?

Not sure when it stopped - didn't notice it while driving... vehicle had been stood for a few months without going very far. I then drove it a few times before it stopped....

Would definitely change the thermostat and they are not expensive and very easy to fit, if you can afford it, just to be secure, change the sensor too.
The fact its been sat for a few months leads me to believe its the thermostat, electrical stuff usually goes when using the vehicle frequently.

For future reference, a good idea would be to run the bongo at least one time a week even without actually driving it,; just to get temps up and everything circulating properly, and make sure you switch the air con on too as they have got a tendency to seize without regular use.

Hope you get it sorted soon and at a good price :) always good to have as many bongos on the road as possible
