Won't start & the RAC (2l petrol )

Engine turning over but wouldn't start. RAC called , I have full cover Inc home start, mechanic arrived from the local garage .Offered to expose engine bay for him but told "I, ve worked on these before so leave me to it" 20 mins later I was told it could be anything and can't fix it. He didn't look in the engine bay at all.
I disconnected the battery for 15mins reconnected and now starts......any ideas what the problem was ? Thanks
