? Do you mean the oil strainer, you just wash it, there isn't a replaceable filter as such ?
See page 39/40 for details

Yes the atf fluid strainer,i've cleaned it and one of the gauze's looks like it's split a little (smaller of the two visible) it also looks like a film has built up on the gauze so i suspect there will be similar internally.
While it's off, i figured it would make sense to replace it

Yes it would make sense to replace it. if the gauze is starting to break up it Will cause serious problems. You need to make sure that you have the correct amount of bolt holes when ordering the new filter. This is just One place that sells them.

Cheers, that was the only place i have found them,i've ordered one £50.00 painful..though after nearly 25yrs it's probably due one, should be cheaper than a new box!
As an aside i've been researching and a common cause of a hard shift 1st to 2nd which seems quite common with Bongo's is due to clogged filters which require more viscous atf to function i.e worse when cold..which is what i have ..
I'll update this thread once it's done and report any changes/improvements.

Intrigued as to what could cause the gauze filter to start breaking up ? Was there much debris that could cause damage to it?

No debris ..i stared at it for a good while trying to decide if it was made that way, i can only assume that the fluid pressed the gauze against the metal cross bar and over time caused it to split it was a perfect straight line and one side was coming over the bar which supports my theory.
