bit of a leak

Post by clogger » Thu Mar 08, 2007 12:23 pm

seem to have developed a wee leak well more of a drip

if you look under the van from the drivers side there are 2 rubber pipes to the left hand side of the petrol tank that go up into the side of the van
just thought about it maybe something to do with the rear heater??
it seems to be coming from above both pipes dripping down both pipes does`nt seem to drip when the engines running
only whenn the engine is turned off and does`nt smell like coolant seems to be water as it not that sweet smell of coolant and not sticky to the touch

any ideas
cheers

clogger - you've just bought your Bongo. Whats the dealer guarantee - did they give one?

Aircon is a popular suggestion and I would agree especially if you have electronically controlled
air conditioning and you have it on Auto. You may have warm air coming out but it uses the freezer
first to get rid of humidity in the atmosphere and quickly clear the windscreen.

i hope your right
as i say i have not been using the aircon

dealer has been informed and i mentioned it would be a better idea to take it to the bongo friendly garage over in huddersfield and he was fine with that so fair enough

few things i have noticed though even though theres no gurgling the temp slowly gets up to about 11/12 mark the bottom pipe still isnt warm
does`nt get any higher on the gauge the fan does`nt come on but it does work cos i`ve have seen it going ??
also the bottom 2 pipes under the rear matrix feel crunchy if squeezed so suspect theres crud in them, at the very least i think a good flushing thru and redo the coolant
Image

its hard to see from the image but it`s leaking from above the pipe and dripping down the pipe

If you do have climate control, make sure it's running manually and wind the temperature up to maximum.
If I run mine on auto in cold humid conditions it drips, if I run it manually it doesn't drip.

Worth a try.

Use your guarantee while you have it clogger - unless I've musunderstood, you've already said you havent been using the aircon. When I was inspecting Bongos, I noticed some had crunchy pipes and some didnt. I went for the latter.

Can anyone advise what might cause one Bongo of a certain age to have crunchy (a.k.a. perished pipes) while another one does not. I wonder if replacing pipes is a b****y good idea at start of ownership if crunchy pipe syndrome is detected

i do not have climate control by that i assume you mean the digital version nah it`s manual all the way

and the only pipes that are crunchy are the two bottom pipes all the rest seem ok.

just waiting for a price of a new matrix if it is that think it will be going over to huddersfield just for a good once over

the rear heater wont be used much so i may just oik the pipes off and bypass it
or wait till dent and everones gone to sleep and swap it over :D :D  :D

right i`m off to pull a few panels off to have a nosey now wheres that hammer

looks like boris the bongo is leaving

told the dealer all about the problems etc and i was not happy about them
especially now it`s started leaking
it was meant to have had a new waterpump thermostat etc this i think has been done but the guy who did it has`nt flushed the system hence not nice bluey/green liquid but sludghy brown so nice new waterpump making all the system work how it should so the sludge has blocked up the rear matrix comes under higher pressure and pop it gives

so i told mr dealer nah not happy about all this gonna bring it back for a refund or replacement,
so have now done a deal on another one he has in black tinted windows just waiting registering so it starts all over again

shame though cos other than that i was now getting along with it

on another note i could always cap it off but it does`nt leak till system gets hot so is only a pin prick type affair
as anyone any thoughts on radweld on this
even though i am not keeping it now just curious

cheers

wouldnt even think about using radweld. too much of a risk clogging up vital parts of the bongos cooling system for my liking.
