Welcome Mick - you shouldn't be using RED diesel
Drain off the muck dragged up from the empty tank by loosening the drain screw on the bottom of the filter housing.
Might be better to change the filter anyway. If you do, then half fill the new filter with injector cleaner and the other half with diesel - it'll start without bleeding.

right lads
ive done as you have said ie taken filter off filled with diesel and fitted back on.
van started first time bit smoky but soon cleared running nice and smooth but 10 minutes later started stuttering then cut out again now back to square 1
mine is the automatic primer as it doesnt have the pump on top
any help would be much appreciated
thanks

Having spent far too many hours fixing the bongo fuel system I have done the whole clean and bleed.
the areas that might get blocked are the obvious filter and the little filter under the bango where the pipe meets the fuel pump ( about 2" down under a spring).
The pump self primes. An empty tank requires more than two cans worth of fuel to pick up properly. It will start and cough and need restarting several times to fill the system properly.
Some filter have priming pumps others don't (mine doesn't) but as said earlier the engine elf primes so just keep tryin it. took me about 4 start cough stops before it cleared.
Check you haven't squashed a pipe.
If this doesn't help you may have a more serious problem, but if it was fine before running out there is no reason why it should have.
Good luck
Andy
