I am looking at changing the Radio that was supplied with my bongo of last year. Can anyone advise of any things I need to be aware of. I have not taken the current one out, but am wondering about connector types and so on for power, the aerial and speakers.
I am just after a basic CD radio player
Thanks

Eltax do a very good unit at a very reasonable price, you will need a mazda connector, you should find posts on removing old unit and speakers if you do a search

Hi Thomo2000. Have a look at the new thread I've just started.

just bought a 'venturer' CD/DVD player with 8" screen which magically comes out of the unit. Half price (£199) from Halfrauds. Simple to fit and looks
superb next to my new BMW clock, not only that but I can watch films when I'm parked up.
If anyone has seen one of these and been tempted, go for it!

What about the connectors

Thanks for the replys. One issue that I want to make sure I cover is teh power, speakers and arial connectors. Arwe these standard on car radios, or do I need to watch out.
My bongo has front and rear speakers.

You may need to get a conversion harness to change it from the Mazda fittings - mine already had one because they'd replaced the Japanese unit already.

The conversion harness cost £1000.00 and is dead simple. The ariel, well it just plugs in..
Hardest part for me was to figure how to get the old one out!!

I,ve had my new sony headunit lying around here for months now... whoever had replaced the original "jap spec" unit, had cut off the original plugs

and scotched the wires to the replacement stereo

Its a real mess behind that stereo i tell thee, auto electrician methinks

If it's as per the picture, you'd still need another connection for the speakers wouldn't you? The loom in the bongo has two connections, one for the speakers and one for the power (live, acc etc...)

That Maplin one looks nothing like mine. As you say wrster, it has a double socket/plug at the ends.

The Maplin one has only one connector, non for the speakers..

If you use your Bongo for camping its worth getting a radio with an IR remote so you can operate it from the back seat.

The remote that came with the Sony CDXGT410 works great. Have looked at the Eltax (which I didn't know about and looks like terrific value) and only the remote sets the Sony apart it would seem. FM and AM reception and general sound from the Sony seems good given the Bongo speakers limitations.
PS.....don't leave a soldering iron lent on the plastic trim over centre consul. Now have a nice little molten channel in our lovely Bongo..ggrroan.
Next steps

Well, lots to think about. I think my first step will be to get the current radio out and have a good look at the connectors. Then get a replacement. Thanks for all your input.
esp the hint about the soldering iron.
