Radio Wiring to control power source lb/sb DO NOT DELETE

On my last bongo I installed a Lidl radio which drained the leisure battery and so had to put an inline switch, this was barely acceptable but necessary at the time.

Now with my new car I have fitted a LB and new radio but I didn't want to have to turn it on and off every time I go out, which I would if I just wired it to the LB but wanted to be able to use it without the keys in from the LB while out or camping etc. also had in the back of my mind the last one draining the LB.

So I could have had a on off on switch and feed one side from the starter and one from the Leisure batteries but didn't want the off.

My solution was to get a cross over relay and on off switch so with the switch off it works from the ignition switch and flick the switch and the relay changes the power source to the leisure battery
I used a on off led switch and a relay like THIS

I already had a willinton wire going into the bottom of fuse 8 so disconnected the acc input on the radio in the loom, this ment lights cig socket etc still work from lb.

On the relay

I wired terminal 86 to the lB via a spare wire in the willinton kit through the switch and 85 to earth

30 went to the acc input on the radio

87a came from the top of fuse 8 through an in line fuse so powered by ignition

and 87 via the other wire from the willinton kit

So now with the switch off it works on ignition and with the switch on works from the lb and works without the keys in.

Switch, relay, connectors, fuse holder and Wire cost around £20, I bought from a local motor supplies so paid more than online. and got all rated at over 10 amp as that's the fuse in the radio (wire is 17amp relay and switch much more)

Tested it at the bash and works a treat.

WHAT A BRILLIANT POST !
I have just fitted full conversion and had an electrician fit zig power management system. I don't have willington kit but do have relay fitted for split charging of both batteries so i'm sure i can adapt this idea. The point is the electrician did as asked and doctored fuse 8 as per factsheet so cig lighters/blinds worked on leisure battery but when i asked for radio to be on ignition it was head scratch time and after much persuasion [ from electrician and another i asked ] i stuck with the radio on lb but now never have it on cus i always forget to switch it off !! - you have just solved a problem ! i can't wait to give the sparks a print out of your post and tell him to get it sorted !!!

I love this stuff! In essence it should also be possible instead of having a switch in sequence to 86, use another relay like a starter interrupt/immobilizer set up off the alarm circuit to shut it off when locking the vehicle!!?? If the radio is forgotten in LB mode...

Possibly but we like to watch the tv which is in the radio in bed, so lock the doors and settle down, just in case we fall asleep

Fair play! I tend to just lock the doors & not use the alarm at night...

I did a similar thing with mine, but used an on-off-on switch, mounted in the dash. I thought about using a relay, but didn't want it to be an additional drain on the leisure battery (minimal, I know).

I hope this might work for me too. I have just had fitted a Pioneer Avh-3300bt and so far as I can see, there is no way to turn it off other than by removing the keys. Was Thinking of just putting axswitch into the rear of the van so I can turn it off when I am in bed !

I wonder if you can throw any light on my problem, just purchased the same unit as you, bought the adaptor cable to allow the unit to link up to the Bongo's wiring, made up a new earth to chassis.
Fine, everything connected but the unit is dead! have not connected the light green wire to power side of handbrake switch.. what's that for anyway? if its necessary which is the parking power switch cable
Sorry, getting very frustrated, I expected this to be straight forward, 3 connector blocks + aerial and away! but no such luck.

the parking power switch cable is probably to connect to handbrake switch thus preventing dvd from being watched whilst driving.

I have a ripspeed with same thing. i by passed it by connecting it to a permanent live. if i recall correctly unit won't work till it's connected.

if the legality bit of viewing screen whilst driving worries you [ as it did me ] there is a way round it in the link below assuming your main screen can be isolated.

Nice set up.

Our radio has an off button, but I've a question regarding stereos and battery drain as ours is hooked permanently to the LB and loses it's settings if the Bongo is not driven for a week or so.

So, do car stereos tend to draw current through the switched live even with the faceplate off? If so why?

I'd not normally ask before trying a little bit of investigating, but seeing as this topic has arisen and could be a solution I'd though I'd try my luck.

Yes, car radios haven't really progressed in design for many many years!
They have two power feeds, one switched by the ignition which controls the radio on/off for playing and the other a permanent 12 volt feed to retain the memory (they haven't yet discovered flash memory ).
Now how the designer users the two feeds is a matter of choice, not all arrange for the main power to be fed via the switched connection Some only use the permanent for the memory and hence the variation in current consumed when the unit is "Off" some have been known to take over 200mA from the permanent feed which will indeed flatten a battery after a few days.
