5W 30 is pretty thin, and would be ideal for colder climes and, I guess, short runs as mentioned above. Has anyone using this grade noticed if the oil consumption has gone up?
I'd be very surprised indeed if using 10W 30 or 40 oil caused a significant increase in fuel consumption over 5W.
For normal driving and/or motorway runs, I'd rather stick with 10W.
You need to understand what those numbers mean.
The 5 or 10 does not apply when warmed up as that is the cold viscosity and thus shows how the
oil performs when cold.
The 30 or 40 is the hot viscosity and shows how the
oil performs when at working temperature - therefore a 5W/30 and a 10W/30 will both have the same viscosity in "normal driving and/or motorway runs" but a 5W/40 or 10W/40 would be "thicker" then.
The 5W will (as Mike says) impart less drag on the engine (and thus help make starting easier from cold) and circulate quicker after a cold start and thus protect the engine sooner.
You never "drive" on a 5W or 10W
oil only start on it.
You "drive" on the 30 or 40 bit.
