I for one did not take my camera

more concerned our Bongo was not well and may miss Buxton meet

So sadly I do not think any photos were taken. Roof was transported in a large van. I too bow to Waynes mechanical prowess in all things Bongo

hey up mike,
unfortunately no photos were taken of the roof removal but its quite simple really, just couldnt remove the whole lining cause the screws were threadlocked in place so ive got the whole lot for the moment till i get the screws removed ready for spraying.
we removed the black screws holding the lower part of the canvas down, undo the two gas struts. disconnect the two earthing wires at the back along with the motor connectors. undo 4 bolts holding the whole roof to the body of the bongo and simply slide the whole roof off the back of the body.
then with the help of three other people pick it up and sling it in the back of a big big big sprinter van and drive away.
i thought that the roof would have been heavier but i think that two people could carry it.i think if you put all the rear seats together and lifted them up then thats about the same weight.
lifting into position on our bongo might be a bit of a different story but ive got use of farm machines to lift it into place.
mike when i get round to it i will strip you out a microswitch but it probably wont be this side of christmas.

Wow - a microswitch. I can't believe my luck and thanks+++++ I've lived with a roof light flashing for a year now - to think I might put it to rest. Mind you, its a snug little installation so it'll be interesting to see if I can prise the old one out and connect a new one.

One other thing, Mike, if you happen to get involved in it. I know this one has been discussed before, but one or two screws that hold the tent lining into the AFT at the front end of the AFT on mine have come adrift. What seems to have happened is that plastic plugs that screws go into have pulled out. The problem is the screws are so tight I cant get a phillips screwdriver to undo them withou a risk of stripping the heads. Because I'd always wanted have one anyway, I bought myself an impact screwdriver and this might have been its first job. BUT when I tried the screwdriver out, I reckon it needs such a whack with a hammer that it could damage the AFT if I used it. If you happen to be faced with the same problem and find a solution, I'd be v interested to hear it.

Are you going to respray the AFT or is it going on 'as is'. Its great to think that Waynes Bongo has een able to help out so many other Bongos + make some £ for the Buy Wayne a New Bongo Fund - result all round

No rush at all for the microswitch - just great to know I may one at some point

hi mike, not yet thought of a way to remove the screws without stripping the heads. yes it will be resprayed neat green.

I have had a look at my Alternator that was not working correctly, The carbon brushes are worn. There does not seem to be a simple way to replace them

They look to have been sealed in to the housing that holds them in place

It would be strange if they were, does the back cover of the alternator come off?

It was several years ago when I did it on the Fiat but do recall it wasn't too difficult to do even with the alternator still on the engine.

I'l be very interested to hear how you tackle that one Mike, as I reckon Bongo owners generally may have to deal with this one from time to time. Good luck - at least you have an old spare one to practice on

Whle I think of it, there been some people on here needing to replace torn fly netting in their roof tents. Will one of yours go up for sale in due course?

Scanner, I have removed the cover, no easy way to get to brushes, will post a photo of the alternator inners, certainly not possible to replace brushes with alternator still installed in Bongo.

Arrows point to top brush which is located under the heatsink, this all appears to be riveted together, other brush is located lower down. Alu plate under the top brush is connected to the coils, so not easy to remove

What is the make and model of the alternator?

At an educated guess looking at the photo I would say that you have to carefully lever the voltage regulator ( the item you call the heat sink) off the two studs to expose the brush holder, you can then gently remove the brush holder making sure the brushes which are spring loaded do not leap out and be lost.
