I doubt if the actual joints are wrecked. It might well be worth covering them with Waxoyl to keep the grit out.

The ebay seller didn't argue the point, saw the photos & put a new set straight in the post, arrived this morning

He did say he had never had a single complaint in all the years hes been selling them for the bongo, reckons he's shifted over 8000.
As I said before - get yours checked if you've replaced yours in the last couple of years.

Regarding vaseline: this causes rubber to perish more quickly. When I worked for a mobile phone network we were forbidden from using vaseline to help get wires through bulk head grommets so I used an alternative. It took a lot of explaining when customer's saw the tube of KY Jelly in my tool box!!!
